After Bethesda’s gameplay reveal trailer for the upcoming Doom reboot was shown during their E3 2015 Keynote Address, fans of the first-person shooter franchise were all abuzz due to the footage’s fast-paced energy, blazing gunplay, and over-the-top action. In fact, a lot of people’s impressions of the game have been so positive thus far that many are considering the new FPS a return to form, and calling it modern old-school shooter.
In addition to id Software paying close attention to the roots of what makes Doom so great, the game developers have also been busy making sure to inject the latest installment with a healthy dose of innovative and contemporary qualities as well. For instance, in a cool bid of ingenuity, the company is offering up a unique map-building feature for the release entitled SnapMap, which lets players construct their own levels by simply “snapping” individual rooms and hallway sections together with an easy-to-use interface. Not to mention, Doom fans should also be pleased to know that the game is going to include a multiplayer mode with classic components hearkening back to the PC version such as the now-archetypical FPS practice known as deathmatch of which Doom pioneered.
Speaking of which, as Doom fans were previously promised, gamers who pre-ordered Wolfenstein: The New Order will soon be able to take a shot at Doom‘s forthcoming multiplayer Alpha. Although an official date hasn’t been announced yet, it’s been confirmed that PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One players of the Nazi-slaughtering title will be selected from its beta pool by Bethesda “in the coming months”.
If fans wish to participate, they must make sure to redeem the codethat came with their copy of the game on the official Wolfenstein website. Furthermore, those who bought The New Order via Steam, PlayStation Network, or Xbox Live should rest easy, because the digital entitlement data necessary for registration is already on file. But, if players who wanted to participate in Doom‘s multiplayer Alpha aren’t chosen to do so, it’s definitely worth noting that all of the people who pre-ordered The New Order are eligible to join up for the multiplayer beta next year before Doom is released.
With so much demon slaying goodness to look forward to in the near future, there’s no doubt that Doom fans are clamoring to take on the Marine’s role yet again and blast some hell-spawns back to Hades. And if anyone’s lucky enough to attend QuakeCon 2015, there’s a good chance that they’ll be able to get their hands on a playable pre-alpha portion of Doom‘s multiplayer component this weekend.
Doom is being developed for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and is set for release some time in Spring 2016.
