Ever since 1993, Doom has been a key component in helping to shape the FPS genre, with the name still carrying weight nearly three decades later. While Doom 4 was eventually cancelled, what the world got instead was the reboot of the same name in 2016 and Eternal coming out as a follow-up in 2020, showing the world that the franchise is alive and well. One of the staples of the series is its fast-paced action and gory violence, but there may be some out there who would like less aggressive gameplay mechanics. That's what one modder has managed to do, at least. Over on ModDB, as spotted by Rock Paper Shotgun, a user who goes by Wine_Toilet has uploaded an add-on simply called "FRENDOCACO." This mod essentially makes it possible for Doom players to befriend one of the game's demons, the Cacodemon. A tweet even shows a brief clip of it in action in which the Doomslayer pets one of them, inducing a bunch of hearts to float around the enemy. The Cacodemon then turns to some attacking Imps and begins to fire back at them, and the former enemy basically turns into a companion.RELATED: Doom Eternal on Switch Is Getting a Limited Edition Physical ReleaseThese floating red creatures may not be the most horrific enemies in the Doom universe, but they are almost certainly one of the most recognizable. With their giant eye and that familiar hissing sound when they're nearby, they are pretty much on par with the Imps, Arachnotrons, and Revenants in terms of notoriety. They're also one of the most annoying, along with the Lost Soul flying skulls, with the latter installments giving them the ability to quickly dodge attacks.

As one of the most influential FPS games of all time, Doom has a roster of iconic enemies that go hand-in-hand with its speedy violence. Most people probably wouldn't think of the series as being one that can actually encourage players to bond with the hell spawn that are out to kill them. Yet "FRENDOCACO" shows that, after all this time, there are people out there coming up with multiple ways to modify and play this classic.

Not to mention the sheer number of devices that can run the game. It's even possible to play Doom within Doom itself, which is an incredible feat of modding. In fact, it's probably the modding community that is largely responsible for the original releases still being in the gaming limelight. Of course, the reboot and Doom Eternal are proving that the formula can be used successfully in this era of game development, and it's good to see that the franchise is still going after all these years.

Doom was released in December 1993 for multiple platforms and has been ported to many systems over the years.
