The game that received the most coverage at Bethesda's E3 2019 press conference was without a doubt Doom Eternal, which received new campaign gameplay footage, more story information, and the reveal of a unique new asymmetrical multiplayer mode called Battlemode. While many fans assumed that traditional deathmatch multiplayer would also be a part of the Doom Eternal package, it's now been confirmed that's not the case.

Speaking to IGN, Doom Eternal executive producer Marty Stratton explained why Doom Eternal won't have a traditional deathmatch multiplayer mode. "When you look back to Doom 2016, we kind of did something more traditional. Skill vs skill twitch vs twitch. It didn’t have any of the components of Doom that people loved from the campaign. It didn’t have the slayer or demons in a meaningful way. It just kind of fell flat so we really flipped the script on it and decided we need to develop this internally, we need to pull it from what Doom is all about, demons vs slayer."

The 2016 Doom reboot featured an old-school deathmatch multiplayer mode that, as Stratton admits, received a mixed response from the community. There were those that loved the old-school FPS gameplay the Doom reboot provided, whereas others found it to be barebones and regressive. Instead of trying to address concerns with Doom 2016's deathmatch multiplayer, though, id Software has dropped it completely in favor of Battlemode.

why doom eternal won't have deathmatch multiplayer

As previously mentioned, Battlemode is a new multiplayer mode in Doom Eternal that offers asymmetric multiplayer gameplay. Two players control Demons where one player controls the Doom Slayer, which should be closer to the kind of gameplay fans get from the campaign than traditional deathmatch would provide. However, this is a serious departure from what fans expect of Doom, and it remains to be seen how they will react to it.

We haven't seen much of Doom Eternal's Battlemode yet, though, and so it's far too early to judge it. It's possible that it is more exciting than traditional deathmatch multiplayer could ever be, but it's also possible that it will just leaves fans disappointed. With Doom Eternal launching in November, fans will find out if its new multiplayer mode lives up to expectation or if it falls flat.

Doom Eternal will launch on November 22 on PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One.
