After many years of dormancy, 2016 saw the revival of the Doom franchise as the Doom Slayer arose to battle demons once again. Come 2020, the Slayer returned in Doom Eternal, the most recent entry of the Doom reboot series. With The Ancient Gods Part 2 out now, many assumed this DLC pack would close out the Doom Eternal chapter but developer id Software isn't done yet.

Marty Stratton, Executive Producer on Doom Eternal and its Ancient Gods DLC packs, confirms that support for Doom Eternal will continue. In a short clip posted on the official id Software Twitter account, alongside Doom Eternal director Hugo Martin, Stratton told fans to "stay turned, because we've got more Doom Eternal updates coming this year."

This is the first bit of news surrounding the future of Doom Eternal post Ancient Gods. Even Martin called Ancient Gods Part 2 "the epic conclusion to the Slayer arc we started in 2016." With Ancient Gods being a definitive end chapter of the stupidly overpowered Doom Guy's recent escapades, fans were not expecting much else until the next time the Doom Slayer returned to bring unspeakable destruction in the name of human justice.

The wording has left fans pondering what those updates may be referring to with regards to which facet of Doom Eternal the developer will focus on. While the major mode of Doom Eternal was its highly praised single player campaign, the game did include a multiplayer component. In this sense, considering Stratton's wording within the clip posted by id Software, some of those updates may be for the multiplayer mode. The other option could be new ways to experience the campaign with additional challenges and abilities.

While Stratton's sendoff has garnered most of the attention, prior to the announcement of further updates, the Doom Eternal producer took the chance to thank the fans. Doom Eternal has been a great success for id Software bringing in more than $450 million just under a year since the game released on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The title then made its way onto the Nintendo Switch with a port that finally released in December 2020 following numerous delays.

What fans can expect for Doom Eternal are the impending PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series console versions. These ports are scheduled to release this year but no firm date has been provided by id Software or publisher Bethesda Softworks. Until then, players have time to conclude the saga of the Doom Slayer in The Ancient Gods Part 2 DLC which is available now.

Doom Eternal is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series console versions coming later this year.
