Today, players learned more about the upcoming id Software game, Doom EternalNot only will the game return to the combat system that fans have come to know and love, in Doom Eternal there will be an increased focus on platforming to raise player "engagement."

This news comes from Hugo Martin, the creative director of both Doom 2016 and the upcoming Doom Eternal. He spoke to Gamesindustry.biz shortly after the debut of the first 10 minutes of Doom Eternal gameplay, explaining that the next game in the Doom series would have an increased focus on platforming and movement. He said that while they felt they had nailed the combat in the first game, there was still room for improvement in the time spent between combat missions.

Martin said that in the new Doom game players will "master and conquer the levels just as much as you conquer the combat and encounters." He went on to explain that these changes were made so that players would get their money's worth out of the game, "It's very easy for us to make it, 'Here's a super-powerful gun and some hallways; just walk down them and slaughter everything.' That's not a $60 game in my opinion."

In the official trailer for Doom Eternal, it's clear that the new emphasis on platforming will be integrated into combat sequences as well. The Doom trailer also features an awesome looking sword, which may lead to some awesome leaping and slicing combos. In the trailer, fans see Doom Guy get launched across the map and shoot two demons while airborne, before landing on a third demon and melee killing it.

Players have also learned some new movement options that weren't available in the last game from the trailer. There appears to be a new dash back mechanic and it looks like the double jump will be far more impactful than the one in the last game. It will be interesting to see how this works with the centered weapon option that will be present in Doom Eternal.

Taken all together, these new movement options look to be a fantastic addition to the Doom series, allowing players even more freedom for how they want to approach the game. Players can look forward to more engaging combat and challenging puzzle sequences to tie it all together. However, there is still no word on if the new Doom game will be able to run on a digital camera from 1998.

Doom Eternal will be released on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One on March 20th with a Switch release to come at a later date.
