Doom Eternal's latest update contained lot of new features and fixes for its single-player and multiplayer, including a new map and cosmetics. With this new update being released, fans are anticipating the next thing that id Software will be adding to the game. While it was promised that a free Invasion mode would be released for the game, the developers announced earlier today that their efforts will be re-focused on a new single-player mode.

Doom Eternal's Invasion mode was announced around the game's first unveiling, which was a mode that allowed players to invade other players' campaigns as a playable demon, in a similar fashion to the Dark Souls series. With the pandemic forcing developers to work remotely from home, this has slowed down the progress and schedules of major releases and development. This includes id Software, where the the remote work model has impacted the Invasion mode update. This update is being scrapped in-favor of a new mode taking its place: a brand-new Horde mode.

This was announced earlier on Bethesda's website and id Software's Twitter. According to Marty Stratton, the Executive Producer of Doom Eternal, this decision was made after taking in consideration the reactions towards the gameplay and combat that is currently available in the latest update. With the focus being shifted to this new Horde mode, Stratton promises that this mode would provide "more of the diversity and challenge that you're looking for."

While some might be disappointed that Doom Eternal's promised PvP element is being discarded, some players are thrilled that there will be more focus towards the single-player component. With the Ancient Gods Expansion DLC wrapped up, this next step in the game's roadmap is the right call according to some fans. A Horde mode where players can have the Doom Slayer ripping and tearing waves of demons apart until they die sounds very in-line with the tone and mood of the game, and will sure to give players a challenge.

For the multiplayer fans of Doom Eternal, Stratton also announced in the letter that the game's BATTLEMODE will be given a bit of an overhaul as well. This includes giving it a more competitive rank-based structure, a new map, as well as improvements made towards the mode's stability. He then goes on to say that more news about Doom Eternal will be unveiled at the Quakecon Digital Event in August.

Doom Eternal is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
