The final piece of DLC for Doom Eternal landed earlier this week, and it appears that not only does it mean the end of this particular installment in the series but perhaps the end of the story for the Doom Slayer altogether. The Ancient Gods Part 2 arrived to finish off the story in a very big way and had some surprising twists and turns in its conclusion. One thing that is certain is that it appears we finally have an answer on just why the Space Marine was so very, very good at killing off demons. Be warned: this article contains MAJOR SPOILERS.
The end of Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part 2 sees the Slayer head to Immora for a final battle against the Dark Lord. It turns out that, once the Doom Slayer arrives at the gates of Immora, this will be the final battleground in Doom Eternal as the Dark Lord and the battle hardened "human" are set for an epic showdown. In order to end the game, a player must actually fight the ultimate evil in two separate battles allowing the game to demonstrate just how hard it is to defeat the ruler of Hell.
Revelations
As the final battle unfolds in Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part 2, the Doom Slayer and Dark Lord have a brief dialogue, where more than a few eons old secrets are shared by the king of the demons. After the Slayer defeats his enemy in the first battle, it's revealed that The Father - the presumably most poewrful deity in this universe - is not the creator of all things. In fact, the Dark Lord claims he was the first being and created The Father and everyone and everything else.
The Father confirms to the Doom Slayer that he was in fact created by the Dark Lord. The war between Heaven and Hell did not rage in Doom Eternal because the demons were jealous or because they were cast out. Rather, it was The Father and his army of The Vergil - Angels - had been trying to kill the Dark Lord as a way to take his power, give it to The Father, and raise that entity into true godhood status. In The Ancient Gods Part 2, it's revealed the Doom Slayer was created by The Vergil as a clone of The Father for the purpose of taking down the Dark Lord.
The End of 'The End'
In order to once and for all stop the apocalypses that has been unleashed in the popular series that began with Doom in 2016, the Doom Slayer must kill Dark Lord which he eventually manages to pull off. Once the ultimate evil is defeated, every demonic entity that the Dark Lord created cease existing. Because he was, in a way created by the Dark Lord as well, the Slayer falls unconscious and is eventually returned to a cursed sarcophagus and left behind on Ingmore's Sanctum, waiting until The Father might need him again.
Developer id Software has been careful to not explicitly say that the Doom Slayer's story is entirely over, though the game's director has said before, he's heavily considered the idea of a female Doom Slayer. The developer has said it wants to do more in the Doom universe, though, but has yet to divulge if it will be with a new character of another story starring the long running character.
