Doom Eternal is finally here and players are already ripping and tearing through the game with a vengeance. While the fantastic gameplay, minimalist-but-satisfying story, and awesome visuals and soundtrack are all huge draws, there is also the lure of Doom easter eggs and secrets waiting around every corner to be discovered.

The Easter Eggs are largely references to past id Software titles, all wrapped up in a celebration of the path that led to Doom Eternal and scattered throughout the game. The secrets range between cosmetic and being directly helpful to gameplay, so for the sake of completionism, lore, new weapons, and fun, here is a guide to aid in finding the secrets hidden throughout the game's first stage.

The Hell Priest Barge

This is the very start of the game, and there are three secrets to find. It should be noted that even if a player missed these the first time around, Doom Eternal's Fast Travel system makes it relatively easy to go back and pick secrets up after clearing out the hordes of Hell. That said, it's hard to miss the first two secrets: the first Modbot and Codex page are right on the main path leading to the end of the zone. There is a third secret however, locked in a big glowing question mark behind a grate. Don't try to bust through the grate, it won't work. Instead, hunt around for a big crack in the left wall. Punch through the wall and walk down a corridor to the question mark for the prize: a toy Zombie.

Midtown

Immediately after the Barge is Midtown, the introduction to the ravages of Hell on the mortal world. There is a lot to take in here, but don't let the scenery distract from exploring the world. Once again there is a Modbot and a Codex page, and both are lying more or less right on the main path. The third secret is less obvious. After busting through the wall with the green, glowing crack in it, don't go through to the new area yet. Instead, take a look up and to the left. There's a ledge there, with a body impaled on the wall. Double jump up to that ledge and go around the corner to find another Toy, this time of the Doom Slayer himself. Players will quickly find that Doom Slayer is super excited about his own collectibles, which is probably why he kept his old Doomguy suit (which players can wear) around from back in the day.

Ravaged Cathedral

There are five things for the Doom Slayer to find here, and the area is bigger than the previous two, so look sharp. Upon entering the area, there's a storefront with a sign above the doorway that says SCOTT. There is also a truck lying on its side in front of that store. Jump on the truck and walk along it, then jump to the ledge above a different storefront, this one reading ShuZ (for one's feet). This leads to a wide ledge, and on the left wall there's a section with a big crack. Punch it, break it, and go through to drop down to the final toy for the stage: an Imp.

After emerging from the secret room, look to the left. There's a ledge with electrical cables sticking out of it. Jump onto the ledge and keep following it through the collapsed floor. Don't jump down into the space below, but edge along the ledge near the windows (don't go out the windows, stay inside). In the next room, there's a Codex page. After getting it, look to the right: the floor is collapsed. Drop into the room below to find the game's first 1Up.

Now continue down the path towards the end of the level. After breaking through another wall with a glowing green crack, follow the massive pile of rubble on the right until reaching another wall with a crack in it. Break it down for the second 1Up.

Now progress through the level as normal to get a yellow keycard. This will open a shutter that leads to an underground train station. Dodge the traps and don't get fried to find the last secret of the area: another Modbot.

Metro Station

The next bach of secrets are found in the Metro Station, beginning when the player enters the train by climbing up the part of it that's dangling off a cliff. The first is a Codex that is at the end of the tunnel. After proceeding to the right through the conveniently marked EXIT tunnel the player will eventually come to a fork in the road. To the left is a tentacle hole in the floor, to the right is a green crate. Jump on the crate and look up and to the right to find a cracked grate. Jump up, break the grate, and there's the prize: the Infinite Lives Cheat Code. Don't worry, this isn't the sort of cheating punished by Doom Eternal's faulty Denuvo. The grate in front will open up, so jump back into the tunnel and progress forward.

Keep going and the level will open up into a previously pleasant indoor plaza. Get to the second level of the plaza, then look around for an open elevator shaft door. Fall down it and onto a 1Up, which will open the doors back into the plaza's main floor. Continue through the level until finding a window looking out at some devastation and a red screen that reads "Vitreous." Descend and walk along the right ledge until coming across a 1Up across a chasm. Jump, swing on the bar in the middle of the gap, and sail into that 1Up.

Citadel of Hell

The last secrets are inside the Citadel of Hell, the last part of the stage. Both are located on the ground floor of the lift at the center of the Citadel. Search around the circular chamber and they're easy to find. One is on a ledge to the right of the entrance to the lift, and the other is at the big, gated off entrance to the lift.

Doom Eternal is available for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One. A Switch release is planned for the future.
