A series of Doom fans are creating a mod for the classic 1994 sequel that essentially turns the retro FPS into Doom Eternal. With its high-octane first-person shooter action and ultra violence, Eternal showed that the 2016 reboot of Doom was more than just a lightning in a bottle situation. It confirmed that the franchise had truly come back, and in top form as well. Of course, many fans still love the original games from the 90s and a lot of people still play them to this day.
Over the course of nearly three decades, there have been many interesting mods for Doom, including ones that turn it into a different game entirely. As well as this, people have been porting the original entry to all sorts of devices that aren't really meant to play games, such as a John Deere tractor, iPod Mini, and a treadmill. It's things like this that are helping to keep id Software's iconic releases in the gaming limelight, but this team of independent modders has decided to bring old and new together under one roof.
As reported by PCGamesN, a group called RDM Dynasty is currently working on a mod for Doom 2 that inserts assets from Doom Eternal. Players can download an early access version of the project, called "Dead Ascension," from ModDB. Images show how the 1994 sequel and Eternal have been molded into one, with the latter's weapons and UI inserted into the environments more in-line with the former. The description says the mod will use the 3D models of the newer installment, though some screenshots show that the original 2D models may also be present. The sound effects from Eternal have also been implemented and the health/armor system reworked. In order to play the alpha release of "Dead Ascension," fans will need to have GZDoom installed.
The "Dead Ascension" mod is a nice marriage between the retro games and the more modern takes on the franchise, and it shows how much of an impact the iconic FPS still has on the gaming sphere. With an upcoming Half-Life 2 mod that turns the game into Doom, there are still so many people out there who are giving a lot of love to the reboot, but the original installment is something many will still return to, even after all these years.
Id Software is one of the most iconic developers in the world, helping to shape the first-person shooter genre at a time when the technology restricted what was possible in gaming. With the release of the first Doom game in 1993, history was made, and it's great to see that both the older entries and newer ones are beloved by many.
