Before it released Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Retro Studios was known for its work with the Metroid Prime series. For years, fans have been looking for an elusive Metroid easter egg in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, and now a fan named Shane Marchis has finally found it.

In level 4-3 Amiss Abyss, players will find themselves swimming through some deep blue water. If they look closely, they have a small chance of spotting a Metroid swimming around in the water with them. It seems rather easy to miss, which explains why it has taken fans so long to actually notice it.

Since Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze originally released back in 2014, that means it's taken fans a whopping four years to find this easter egg. This also serves as a reminder that the award-winning Retro Studios hasn't released a new game since 2014, as Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is the latest product it's put out.

Like its past games, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze from Retro Studios released to rave reviews, so it's understandable that fans are excited to see what the studio is currently working on. Unfortunately, both Retro and Nintendo have been completely quiet about what it has in store.

Rumors indicate that Retro will announce its next game at some point this year. However, it seems like if Retro was going to reveal a new project, the best place to reveal it would have been at E3 2018. That being said, it's possible Retro could reveal a new game at Gamescom later this month, or perhaps The Game Awards in December. Nintendo also hosts various Nintendo Direct presentations throughout the year, and Retro's next game could potentially be announced during any one of those.

Whatever Retro is working on, its body of work speaks for itself. Almost every game the studio has produced has earned near universal acclaim, and there's no reason to expect any less from its next game.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is out now for Wii U and Nintendo Switch.
