Donkey Kong Country 3DS Screenshots

Valentine's Day is about showing your significant other how much they are loved, and if that's the case then Nintendo must really love 3DS owners. During today's Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata revealed that Mario & Luigi: Dream Team and Mario Golf: World Tour would be coming to the 3DS later this summer, but the pre-recorded showcase didn't stop there; ensuring that it went out with a banana-filled bang.

Nintendo's very own Reggie Fils-Aime made a surprise appearance at the end of the latest Direct video to announce the return of everyone's favorite tie-wearing ape. Fils-Aime announced that Donkey Kong Country Returns, the Wii game that originally launched back in 2010, is currently being ported to the Nintendo 3DS, and will arrive later this year as Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D.

Apparently the game has been given a whole new feel, courtesy of the 3D capabilities of the handheld. That said, Nintendo didn't reveal all that much about Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, but the company has posted a brand new 3D trailer for the game exclusively on the 3DS' eShop. Nintendo also took the liberty of releasing a handful of screenshots for the project during the presentation, and they appear to be rather authentic to the original game.

The original DKCR was developed by Retro Studios, and was met with critical acclaim upon its launch, but some gamers were probably holding out for an original Donkey Kong Country game instead of a straight port of a title they played a little over two years ago. At this point, 3DS owners aren't strangers to first-party remakes on the portable either — The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Star Fox 64 3D made sure of that — but Donkey Kong's latest re-offering should still be an enjoyable experience.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D will be swinging onto the Nintendo 3DS later this Summer.
