2018's Aquaman became an immediate success, grossing roughly $1.148 billion worldwide and receiving much praise for the visual effects and thrilling action sequences. Now, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is looking to continue that success, and according to star Dolph Lundgren, it will definitely do that and more.

Production on Aquaman 2 is currently underway, and the sequel will reunite both lead star Jason Momoa and Lundgren with many returning cast members from the previous film. While the sequel will feature many familiar faces, Lundgren assured fans that Aquaman 2 will offer a moviegoing experience that exceeds that of the first film.

Sitting down with The Hollywood Reporter, the veteran actor discussed new projects like the upcoming mystery adventure Castle Falls while also delving deeper into some of his recent successes with films like Creed 2 (where he reprised his famous role as Ivan Drago from Rocky 4) and of course Aquaman. With the DC project nearing closer and closer to its big 2022 holiday release, Lundgren shared what type of film fans can expect out of James Wan's sequel and the ways it has vastly improved. "That whole picture is just a class act. Everybody from James Wan and Jason Momoa to Amber Heard and the producers. I think this one is better," Lundgren claimed. "I think the script is stronger and it's more exciting. The technology has moved forward in four years, so I was really pleased to be a part of it. James Wan is just going to blow everybody away again by this tremendous world that he creates. He's involved in every little detail, even every little piece of every weapon, and I think it's going to be great."

Considering how stunning the visual effects were in the first film, the sequel is shaping up to be one giant feast for the eyes that will no doubt create a memorable theatrical experience. Lundgren is set to reprise his role as King Nereus, father of Amber Heard's Mera and ruler of the Atlantean underwater kingdom Xebel. The actor took to social media last month, posting a photo of himself in costume and sporting his character's long red hair with a caption that teased the epic story that awaits.

An Aquaman sequel with Wan returning to direct was announced only two months after the first film's successful release, eventually earning its epic title in June 2021. The pandemic delays combined with Wan's goal of not wanting to rush production has created the four-year gap from the first film's 2018 release, as filming began in London just this past summer.

While story details have been kept under wraps, in addition to Lundgren's comments, Wan has confirmed that Aquaman 2 expand on the worldbuilding from its predecessor. The film will see Jason Momoa return as the King of Atlantis, along with Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta. Amber Heard's Mera and Temuera Morrison's Thomas Curry will return as well. Before fans can catch more of the underwater world, other DC projects like The Batman, Black Adam, and The Flash should leave many fans satisfied in the meantime.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to release on December 16, 2022.
