Ren'py is a convenient engine used to make visual novels for the PC. While this was a fitting engine for Doki Doki Literature Club, this engine made it quite challenging to port the game over to consoles.

This is why Dan Salvato decided to change the engine of the game altogether. The game was shifted to the Unity engine so that developers could easily make a console port of this game while also adding some polish to the title that was impossible on Ren'py due to the engine's limitations.
