Rapper, songwriter, and streamer Doja Cat is known for posting seemingly-random and whimsical statements on Twitter. Her latest tweet was a low-resolution Final Fantasy 14 character, hinting that the internet sensation has begun playing the critically-acclaimed MMORPG.

The tweet itself was a low-resolution screenshot of an elf-like elezen–one of the playable races in Final Fantasy 14–on a close up of her face, but with no additional words or context whatsoever. Even more baffling, Doja Cat changed her profile picture to match the screenshot.

The elezen in question appears to be wearing starting gear, and appears to be in Gridania, one of the three starting zones in FF14. While Doja Cat has yet to confirm it, she’s likely giving the game a shot, and the screenshot is of her in-game character. The low-resolution of the screenshot fits well with the eccentric nature of her internet persona.

Doja Cat is no stranger to video games, of course. She has a Twitch channel where she streams games, such as Red Dead Redemption 2, and a TikTok full of inside jokes and references, plenty of which are to gaming and other aspects of nerd culture. Even some of her songs have references to video games, including one with an explicit reference to Final Fantasy itself.

Many fans of Final Fantasy 14 and Doja Cat knew it was only a matter of time before she gave the MMORPG a try, and are thrilled to see it. There was already significant crossover between gamers and Doja Cat fans, so there was no surprise to see the excitement surrounding her cryptic tweet. In less than a day, it gathered over 40,000 likes and 1,300 comments, many of which were other players showing off their characters, asking what FF14 data center she was playing on, or begging her to let them run her through content.

Some Final Fantasy 14 players are worried about what the attention of internet big shots like Doja Cat will do to the game. Final Fantasy 14 has already had unprecedented success with a large influx of players flocking to the game because of the COVID-19 lockdowns, the rampant success of the Shadowbringers expansion, and the troubles surrounding its lead competitor, World of Warcraft. With 3.7 million followers, fans of Doja Cat could create another wave of players in Final Fantasy 14, which could stress the already-taxed servers to their limit. Regardless, only time will tell if Doja Cat has indeed gone back on her word in “Streets” when she said “No Final Fantasy.

Final Fantasy 14 is available now on PC, PS4, and PS5. The Endwalker expansion launches on November 23.
