BBC Studios has announced that a brand new feature-length VR game set in the Doctor Who universe is currently in development called Doctor Who: The Edge of Time. The announcement follows the recent release of Doctor Who: The Runaway, an animated VR experience starring the current incarnation of the Doctor, Jodie Whittaker.

Described as a cinematic, feature-length, and fully interactive adventure, Doctor Who: The Edge of Time is being developed by former Activision and PlayStation veterans at the London based studio, Maze Theory, best known for VR games Peaky Blinders: The Kings Ransom and The Vanishing Act. Publisher PlayStack and developer Maze Theory have taken inspiration from Doctor Who’s 55-year history, promising to “transport fans into a globally-beloved world of aliens, mystery and wonder.”

While the trailer didn’t offer anything in terms of gameplay, BBC has revealed more information about the game's story on their website. Jodie Whittaker reprises her role as the Doctor in Doctor Who: The Edge of Time, who has been hurled through time to the edge of the universe. Using the TARDIS, the Doctor must journey through both new and familiar worlds, collecting crystals to repair spacetime and save the universe from a deadly virus that threatens to rip it apart. With E3 2019 taking place in less than three weeks, more information is likely just around the corner

Players will be armed with the series' iconic Sonic Screwdriver, which can be used to explore new locations, solve mind-bending puzzles, and fight new and classic monsters from the Doctor Who universe. Alongside new never-before-seen monsters, two classic monsters have been confirmed to appear, Weeping Angels and Daleks, a mutant race encased in a metal robot-like shell.

Alongside the PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive, Doctor Who: The Edge of Time is also being released on the new Oculus Quest, as well as the upcoming Vive Cosmos. The Doctor Who franchise has a long history in the realm of video games dating as far back as the mid-1980s. Both PlayStack and Maze Theory are relatively new companies without any major releases under their belt, however, with industry veterans in games, animation, and film steering the ship, and new cutting edge technology, it's clear why BBC Studios is confident in the project.

Doctor Who: The Edge Of Time releases in September 2019 for PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, HTC Vive and Vive Cosmos.
