Many gamers have enjoyed LEGOs, either as a physical toy or video game, at some point in their lives. While LEGO video games have always highlighted zany and comical gameplay, the 'toys to life' game LEGO Dimensions will offer cross-universe stories in which adventures like the wizard Gandalf of Lord of the Rings solving puzzles in Portal's Aperture Science labs are the norm.

It was previously leaked that The Doctor of the long-running Doctor Who series would be joining LEGO Dimensionscast, but few details were revealed at the time. Today at San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. released their first trailer highlighting the Doctor Who-specific gameplay and story.

The trailer, seen above, shows a fair amount of what players can expect from the Doctor Who portion of LEGO Dimensions. The Doctor is seen solving Portal's Aperture Science puzzles with Homer Simpson, riding a mine car alongside Scooby and Shaggy of Scooby-Doo, and shoving a befuddled Gandalf out the door of the infamous TARDIS. While the exact storyline of how The Doctor finds himself involved with the LEGO Dimensions universe is unknown, it looks as though classic Doctor Who villains such as the Cybermen and Daleks will play a major role.

LEGO Dimensions will also use The Doctor's regenerative abilities to create a creative spin on extra character lives. Rather than respawning as the 12th Doctor, if The Doctor is defeated, he'll reappear as the very first Doctor, and make his way back through the regenerated versions of himself up to the 12th Doctor. While this doesn't quite fit with the canon of the television series, it's a great nod to fans of other forms of The Doctor. However, while the 12th Doctor, Clara, and his long-standing enemy Missy will be voiced by their TV actors, it remains to be seen whether prior incarnations of the Doctors will receive the same treatment. With any kind of luck, the game will fare better than other major Doctor Who games, like Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock, which received poor reviews.

LEGO Dimensions draws on both the nostalgia of playing with traditional LEGOs and the unique cross-universe adventures that are only possible in video games. Considering that the Doctor Who series is all about travelling through time, space, and even occasional alternate dimensions, it only makes sense for The Doctor and his TARDIS to drop in on this cross-universe world.

LEGO Dimensions will be released on September 27, 2015 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and the Wii U.
