There are plenty of eras of Doctor Who, owing to its 60-year lifespan. While the eras of the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors were marked by a more extensive global reach and overall heightened popularity, the Twelfth Doctor's era was a little more muted. Criticisms of episodes started to increase during this time and viewing figures, unfortunately, began to drop.

However, there are plenty of Doctor Who episodes with the Twelfth Doctor that are absolutely brilliant and amongst the best the show has ever put out. While there were certainly signs of executive producer Steven Moffat beginning to burn out during Series 8, 9, and 10, there are diamonds among the rough. Doctor Who is the best British sci-fi show with plenty of top-tier episodes.

10 Mummy On The Orient Express

Still from the Doctor Who episode Mummy on the Orient Express

At a point where the Doctor and Clara are struggling to get along, this episode reaffirms their friendship and has a brilliantly creepy villain in the form of the Foretold, a deadly enemy with only one appearance.

This episode would call back to The Big Bang where the Eleventh Doctor, Amy, and Rory received a transmission requesting their help. It is a shame that the show never expanded on who Gus was and what he was after, but this episode itself is one of the Twelfth Doctor's best.

9 Dark Water

Though this story was let down by its second part Death in Heaven, Dark Water is a fantastic atmospheric episode that brings the Doctor and Clara to 'hell', really a facility run by the Master, now coined 'Missy', in disguise.

The end reveal with Missy and the Cybermen is one of modern Who's best and there's great pacing throughout that keeps viewers hooked throughout. Dark Water is one of the best episodes featuring the Cybermen.

8 Hell Bent

While this episode tends to have fans split on what they thought of it, Hell Bent has since gone on to be remembered more fondly than it was when it was first released.

Significant not only to the Twelfth Doctor's era but the show overall, this marks the first time the Doctor properly returns to Gallifrey following the Time War and features the re-appearance of Rassilon. While Rassilon was not handled particularly well, this episode is a great testament to the Doctor and Clara's friendship and caps off Series 9 in a tragic way reminiscent of how the Tenth Doctor and Donna ended their time together.

7 Extremis

At the start of a loosely-connected mid-series trilogy, Extremis threatens to cause an existential crisis in all Doctor Who viewers. It's one of the weirdest modern series episodes but that's not a negative.

With creepy villains the Monks infiltrating Earth, the Doctor, Bill, and Nardole discover throughout the episode that they're actually in a simulation. On top of that, the Doctor's blind throughout, adding an interesting new dynamic to both the main character and the show overall. A fantastic episode that tends to be underrated online.

6 The Husbands Of River Song

Still from the Doctor Who episode The Husbands of River Song

A conclusion to the River Song character, The Husbands of River Song sees her and the Twelfth Doctor meet up and finally go to Darillium, spending over two decades together as husband and wife before River has to go to the library and face her death as seen way back in the Series 4 two-parter Silence in the Library/ Forest of the Dead.

There are plenty of funny, Christmassy moments but at the center is the love story surrounding the Doctor and River. A tearjerker episode that tends to be underrated.

5 Face The Raven

A rare episode in that it features the death of a companion (but, not really), Face the Raven builds upon the sub-plot of Clara trying to become more and more like the Doctor.

It also features a return from Ashildr and Rigsy, as well as a lot of New Who villains who all live in a secret area of London for alien refugees.

4 The Magician's Apprentice/ The Witch's Familiar

Still from the Doctor Who episode The Magicians Apprentice

The two-parter opening to Series 9, these episodes have everything. The Daleks, Davros, Missy, and UNIT, it is an absolute extravaganza that throws a lot at the audience and kickstarts the series in great fashion. It is a hugely underrated Doctor Who story.

Seeing the Twelfth Doctor opposite Davros was a joy and the episodes do more for Davros' character than any of the previous stories featuring him have. The Magician's Apprentice and The Witch's Familiar hark back to Genesis of the Daleks in a clever way and these episodes are some of the Twelfth Doctor's best.

3 Listen

Still from the Doctor Who episode Listen

An episode that asks questions, Listen is a great character piece for the Doctor that pitches itself as a mystery. There are lots of great moments for both the Doctor and Clara and even a return to old pre-Time War Gallifrey.

Coming early in Series 8, the Twelfth Doctor is still new to himself and to the viewers at this point. Listen does a great job of expanding this incarnation's characterization while also telling a decent, original story.

2 Heaven Sent

Still from the Doctor Who episode Heaven Sent

A justified winner of many awards, Heaven Sent is a fantastic episode that gives Capaldi a lot of material to work with as the Twelfth Doctor deals with the loss of Clara while being trapped in a Gallifreyan prison. Fans want to see more like this in future seasons.

Mixing up the format in classic Moffat Who fashion, this episode pretty much solely has the Doctor, with no other characters until the very last moment. It is a brilliant one-hander episode that is amongst the Twelfth Doctor's best.

1 World Enough And Time/ The Doctor Falls

Still from the Doctor Who episode World Enough and Time

World Enough and Time and The Doctor Falls is the Twelfth Doctor swansong we should have had but unfortunately didn't quite get due to Chibnall needing extra time and Moffat being forced to stay on and write Twice Upon a Time. Featuring the Mondasian Cybermen and breaking a first by giving us the first multi-Master story, this story is brilliant for both the Doctor and the Master's characterization. Every version of the Master has been special in its own way, but Michelle Gomez and John Simm knock it out of the park as their respective incarnations.

A true blockbuster episode with a brilliant concept about a spaceship stuck in the pull of a black hole and the time-dilating effects that it causes. These episodes are not only the best of the Twelfth Doctor but the best of New Who as a whole.
