Labyrinth, the 1986 fantasy-musical cult classic, is finally getting a sequel after all these years, to be directed by Doctor Strange's Scott Derrickson.

Deadline Hollywood reported that Derrickson had been attached to the project for The Jim Henson Company and TriStar Pictures; Derrickson himself confirmed the news via Twitter. In addition, Labyrinth 2's screenplay was written by Maggie Levin, who also wrote Into the Dark.

The Labyrinth sequel has technically been in development since 2014, though it took quite a while to move ahead with a director. The first draft of the screenplay for Labyrinth 2 was originally written by Nicole Perlman (of Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel). Derrickson's availability to direct opened up after he parted ways with Marvel over Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness; Sam Raimi will now direct the movie instead.

The original Labyrinth was directed, of course, by Jim Henson himself; it starred Jennifer Connelly as Sarah, who was forced to navigate a magical labyrinth in order to save her little brother from the Goblin King Jareth, played by David Bowie. The movie may have disappointed at the box office, but time has turned it into a cult classic with a generous following of fans.

There's no word yet on a release date or casting for Labyrinth 2, but fans can at least be assured that they will, finally, have a sequel at some point in the future.

Labyrinth 2 is in the works now.
