Sam Rami directed the original Spider-Man trilogy that starred Tobey Maguire. He hasn't directed a superhero movie in the 13 years since the trilogy ended, but Doctor Stange in the Multiverse of Madness looks to change that.

Rami confirmed in a recent interview with ComingSoon, that he would be directing the movie. Its original director, Scott Derrickson, confirmed this earlier in the year, but this is the first time Rami himself has ever said anything about his new position.

Rami made the confirmation while discussing a Doctor Strange easter egg he placed in Spider-Man 2. In his movie, J. Jonah Jameson and Ted Hoffman spitball supervillain names to give Otto Octavius after he falls from grace and becomes Doc Ock. The two suggest "Doctor Strange" at one point, but dismiss it after before realizing its already been taken.

It's not lost on Rami just how funny his new position is. He made a Doctor Strange reference in his Spider-Man sequel, and now, 13 years later, he'll be directing the sequel to Doctor Strange. He claims that he wishes he had the foresight back then to know this would be happening.

Sam Rami happens to be a big fan of Doctor Strange, ranking him among his top five favorite superheroes, which include characters like Spider-Man and Batman. Since Doctor Strange's upcoming movie will be all about universe-hopping, maybe Tobey Maguire can make a cameo as Spider-Man in the film; most fans seem to hope so.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness plans to release November 5, 2021.
