For seven years, Elizabeth Olsen has gained the attention of Marvel fans through her performance as Wanda Maximoff. Since Olsen's debut, there have been many sides of Wanda that Marvel fans have been able to see and WandaVision gave viewers the chance to see the character in a brand new light, and the Doctor Strange sequel will continue that story.
In a recent interview, Olsen discussed the innovativeness of WandaVision and what working on set was like. Olsen revealed that going forward, Wanda and the MCU will continue to develop in ways that not even she is aware of yet.
When asked about the longevity of Wanda Maximoff and the changes she constantly endures, Olsen insisted that she thinks she hasn't tapped into Wanda yet and talked about what she may be able to gain from the circumstances Wanda may be in. "My character was always this emotional anchor to a piece of the story. It was like the heart if there's a heart," Olsen said to Variety. The changes that WandaVision gave not only Wanda but also Olsen's performance allowed the actress to "reinvest" in the character she has been playing for the past few years.
With persistent changes, Olsen mentioned that WandaVision wrapped filming two days before she flew to London to continue to play Wanda in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Olsen cites that change as being particularly difficult because "they were totally different utilizations of the character." Because they were so different, Olsen had to remind herself that while she had only just wrapped WandaVision, the rest of the world would have time to digest what happened in the show before watching the Doctor Strange sequel.
The conclusion of WandaVision proved that Wanda is headed down a dangerous path. After draining Agatha of her magic and losing her family, Wanda went off the grid. In the WandaVision post-credits scene, she is seen in a cabin in the mountains reading from the book Agatha once possessed. Agatha revealed that the Scarlet Witch was always considered a myth and refers to Wanda's magic as Chaos Magic. Notably, the post-credits sequence also features Wanda hearing the voices of her children, Billy and Tommy, calling out to her.
Learning from her newly dubbed Chaos Magic and likely embarking on a quest for her children, with all she's lost, Wanda will be hard to stop. Combined with Loki and Sylvie's actions in the Loki finale, Doctor Strange will have an odd set of foes and allies. It's hard to tell which side Wanda will fall on. With all the trauma she has experienced in WandaVision, Wanda's apparent shift is justifiable but based on Olsen's comments, the upcoming choices she makes may take many by surprise.
WandaVision is now streaming on Disney Plus and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be released in theaters on March 25, 2022.
