While Spider-Man: No Way Home has yet to swing into theatres, there has been plenty of talk brewing about what fans can expect in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Now, a new LEGO set for the upcoming sequel reveals the villain (or one of them): Gargantos.
In addition to getting an understanding of the Doctor Strange 2 villain that our beloved heroes will have to go up against, other details hint at a much darker film than its predecessor that resembles a horror movie at times. The sequel's cast also adds Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch and sees the return of Chiwetel Ejiofor's Baron Mordo and Rachel McAdams' Christine Palmer. Sam Raimi will be making his return to the superhero genre after he replaced Scott Derrickson as the director due to Derrickson's departure over creative differences.
The 264 piece LEGO set includes mini-figures of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Wong (Benedict Wong), and newcomer America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) battling it with Gargantos in a set titled "Gargantos Showdown”. The trio is fighting the enormous creature on the side of a tall building, quite reminiscent of director Raimi's Spider-Man 2 scene where Spider-Man and Doc Ock are also fighting on the side of a skyscraper in New York. Recently, Doctor Strange 2 merchandise suggested the villain Shuma-Gorath would be the primary antagonist of the film. However, the potential confirmation of Gargantos does not necessarily rule out Shuma-Gorath.
Gargantos is a large octopus-looking sea creature who debuted in an issue of Sub-Mariner in 1969. Some fans have been beginning to speculate that Gargantos could evolve to become Shuma-Gorath, a large inter-dimensional monster. While not confirmed, Marvel Studios' animated What If...? series presented another large cosmic, octopus-like creature battling it out with Captain Carter that many fans believed to be Shuma-Gorath, but fans will just have to wait and see if those rumors come true in May.
While it is undergoing significant reshoots, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will finally be soaring into theatres roughly 6 years after the first film, and it is shaping up to be one of the MCU's most mind-bending features to date. As the title suggests, the film will explore more of the growing multiverse that has been set up this past year in many of the Disney Plus series' and which will further be explored in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Tom Hiddleston's Loki is also rumored to make an appearance, as the finale of his series left many unanswered questions that have answers possibly pointing to Doctor Strange. Loki head writer Michael Waldron (Rick and Morty), was hired to rewrite the script along with newcomer Jade Bartlett.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to release on May 6, 2022.
