The Division sets a new record for the industry and becomes the best-selling new IP to-date, making more than $330 million in its first week of sales.

The buzz this week has been all about The Division, Ubisoft's new third-person shooter RPG. And there's good reason—Ubisoft has just announced that the new game generated more than $330 million over five days since its launch, which accounts for both physical and digital sales. That sets a new record for Ubisoft and the industry, as The Division beats the previous record set by Destiny in 2014.

The Division had already set Day 1 sales records for Ubisoft as well as landing at the top of UK sales charts, but this has been called a "tremendous achievement" by Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot:

"The Division taking the top spot in the industry for first week sales of a new franchise is a tremendous achievement. The Division is the latest example yet of our unique ability to deliver immersive gaming playgrounds that keeps players engaged and that they eagerly share with their friends and community."

After a very successful beta and hype surrounding the game, The Division has not only set new impressive sales records but also player engagement records for Ubisoft. According to Ubisoft, The Division had more than 1.2 million concurrent players over the weekend, and players have logged more than 100 million hours in-game.

In comparison, Destiny set the old record in 2014 making $325 million in its first week. According to Activision, the first week of Destiny also saw players logging more than 100 million hours, and its player base has continued to put up impressive numbers so throughout Destiny's lifespan so far.

Before its launch, Ubisoft projected The Division to be on the same level of success as Destiny as well as its other big-name franchises including Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed, but it appears that the game is on track to be the biggest IP Ubisoft has in its library.

Ubisoft online services VP Stephanie Perotti says players' response to The Division has been huge:

"On top of record-breaking sales, player engagement is the highest ever for any Ubisoft title, demonstrating, among other things, that our investments in our online infrastructure and services are paying off. We are delivering an online experience that's on par with the best in the industry, and that matches the quality and connectivity demanded by The Division and its players."

There's a lot more coming from The Division in the coming year with content coming throughout 2016.

The Division is available now on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
