Divinity: Original Sin 2 is one of the top-selling RPG strategy-adventure games on Steam. Players take on the role of an imprisoned Sourcerer and must make their way to freedom, either alone or with the assistance of their companions. The sheer depth of the role-playing present in this game is truly mind-boggling, with the game being absolutely jam-packed with content at every corner. Some people might argue that the content in Divinity: Original Sin 2 is pretty front-loaded, with the latter half being a bit more linear, but that's a small gripe in an experience that is truly unforgettable.

While completing an adventure Lone Wolf style presents a nice challenge, it's always more fun to have company in Divinity: Original Sin 2. Players will greatly benefit from a larger party with a diverse set of skills and also grow closer to the different heroes. In fact, all of them are available for romance, but some are better than others. Of course, this is completely subjective, but there's no denying that some of the heroes in the game simply have a more likable personality than others, making them more alluring and fitting romances for the character in question.

Updated on August 6th, 2023, by Ritwik Mitra: The release of Baldur's Gate 3 is coming sooner rather than later, and fans can't wait to sink their teeth in a meaty RPG with tactical combat that will take hundreds of hours to complete and encourages replayability because of its many varied outcomes. It's easily one of the most hyped video games around, in no small part because Larian Entertainment has an excellent reputation in the industry courtesy of their work on the two Divinity: Original Sin games.

Both titles are brilliant in their own right, but even the most ardent fan of the first game has to admit that the sequel is simply bigger, better, and more engaging in every way. Some people may go so far as to call it overwhelming, which is fair considering the sheer wealth of things players can accomplish in the game. Players can have passionate romances with one of the many characters in this title, although the intensity of these romances can change quite a bit. This list of the Divinity: Original Sin 2 romance options has been updated to include some more information.

Butter

Divinity Original Sin 2 Butter at Fort Joy

On the campgrounds of Fort Joy, as players walk around the inner area of the fort right behind the waypoint statue, there's a blonde NPC named Butter patrolling the area. She can be found standing right above camp boss Griff and will initially be wary of the player. This is understandable since Fort Joy is a savage place full of sadness and anger, with many innocents being forced into imprisonment courtesy of the bigoted actions of the Magisters.

Butter is one of Griff's lapdogs, but that doesn't mean her heart can't be melted. It's possible to start a small romance side story with her, but it will take most of the game for the player to actually see her again. As a result, Butter isn't really the most engaging partner to have in the game, even if her story might serve as a fun distraction.

To romance her, simply engage in a conversation with her and make sure to pick the dialogue options that are the flirtiest. At the end of the dialogue, Butter and the player character will both agree to meet each other at a later time in Arx, where the romance storyline will culminate; however, this is in Act 4. It might be a long wait, but players who don't mind the long game will find their efforts in the first Act to be suitably rewarded by Butter later on.

Meanwhile, romancing Butter at the camp has the effect of her taking the player's side should they challenge Griff, the camp boss, when it comes to freeing the imprisoned elf. Butter will actually fight on the player's side if they choose to flirt with her, which is a boon, given how challenging this battle will be early on in the game.

The Red Prince

Divinity Original Sin 2 Red Prince

The Red Prince is a lizard of royal blood. He was about to become the next emperor of his people but was exiled and is now a fugitive set on regaining his position on the throne. He has the Fighter class, and one of the many assets he brings to the party is being able to dig around without the use of a shovel.

Unfortunately, there is no true romance to be had with him because he will at most consider the player his slave, while his love is reserved for someone back home. This is why he's undoubtedly the worst companion to romance, which is fitting, given how pompous this character is. While his personality might lend to some entertaining moments featuring this character, it's clear that he wouldn't care about the player at all, no matter how much they throw themselves at him. His heart, along with his noble duty, lies with the Red Princess no matter how the events of the game unfold.

How to Romance the Red Prince in Divinity: Original Sin 2

Divinity Original Sin 2 Stingtail

The first step is to speak with Stingtail and later with Bahara at Amadia's Sanctuary. Once players leave the island and Fort Joy to get to Driftwood, speak to the dreamer's ghost at Stonegarden Graveyard. Later on, near the Red Princess' Camp, players must allow the Red Prince to mate with the Red Princess, after which she'll disappear. She needs to be found and freed in Arx after a quest that sends the player sneaking into the consulate. A Swornbreaker is needed to free her, after which the Red Prince will birth a dragon.

Following this chain of events, players will reach a pivotal point in the story where they will be given the choice of spending an intimate night with one of the many potential partners in the game. If the player's affinity with The Red Prince is positive, then they can potentially spend some intimate time together, although it does prove to be a shallow encounter that doesn't really have any long-term repercussions, given that the true love of The Red Prince is someone else.

Fane

Divinity Original Sin 2 Fane

Fane the wizard is one of the more unique characters in the game since he's undead. With his special mask, he's able to adopt the face of anyone around him, or alternatively, he needs to keep his face hidden. He's one of the game's most mysterious characters and is an absolute joy to interact with. There's a reason why so many players consider his origin story to be the best for a replay, given his in-depth knowledge of the world.

He comes across as rather capricious and rude, but he's the subject of a lot of bias and hatred. Ultimately he only wants to find out the history of Rivellon and comprehend the world around him. He's a Wizard, and at the end of the game, he chooses to go out and explore regardless of his romantic attachments, making him a less-than-ideal pick. Of course, this doesn't mean that the romance isn't worth pursuing at all, especially since he's such a riveting and fun character to talk to!

How to Romance Fane in Divinity: Original Sin 2

Divinity Original Sin 2 Fane Quest

To find Fane in Fort Joy, players will need to pass through a hidden path north of Fort Joy. Inside the fort itself, they'll need to kill Kniles the Flenser and pick up the Face Ripper. Outside of the fort, they'll encounter Windego once more, and after battling her, the player can pick up Fane's Mask of the Shapeshifter. Make sure that he's in the party while heading to the Blackpits after escaping Fort Joy's island.

In order to keep his attitude positive towards the player, make sure to never accidentally use a healing potion or spell on him because it will harm him. One of Fane's colleagues in Arx will try to persuade him to become Divine so he can restore his species, but the player character will need to persuade him otherwise at the Crypt of Lucian. Of course, players who don't care about romancing him can make him choose whatever they deem to be fitting for this compelling character.

Beast

Divinity Original Sin 2 Beast

Beast is a talented Battlemage and fearsome Barbarian class fighter. Of course, his class can be whatever the player wishes aside from the default role given to him. He's a bit of a rebel of his kind and attempted to wage war against the Dwarf Queen. However, the Queen destroyed his rebellion and cast Beast out as a nomad. He's now determined to get back to her and end the quarrel once and for all.

He's an excellent storyteller and will have something compelling to say for almost any occasion. That being said, at the end of the journey, all we really know is that he offers the player a story and seems to be ready to go about his own life without them. For the most part, many players consider Beast to be the weakest-written character of all, so players should keep this in mind before settling on him as the game's final romance. Of course, there's nothing inherently wrong with romancing this boisterous dwarf, no matter how cliche his character arc may be.

Divinity Original Sin 2 Finding Beast

Beast has one of the simpler storylines to complete. This is actually something that people consider to be an issue when it comes to this character, but there's no denying that even Beast's simple and straightforward story ends up being a joy to uncover because of the incredibly strong writing present in Divinity: Original Sin 2. The player can find him at Fort Joy, on the Western side of the island. Even better, if he's in the party, then the player will receive a key to Fort Joy's prison if they visit the fort's arena.

At Driftwood, players should make sure that he's in the party while visiting Lohar in the undertavern. The most important part of his quest and the main bulk of it will be in Arx, where players will need to help him with Queen Justinia. It's up to them to decide what her fate will be, but they'll need to keep in mind Beast's concerns when making this choice. There are many revelations that take place which will affect Beast's decision, and players should be completely sure of their choice before ending this quest once and for all.

Lohse

Divinity Original Sin 2 Lohse

Lohse is a talented singer and artist. However, she carries a dark secret with her. She's possessed by a dark demon that occasionally takes control of her. Much of her personal story revolves around trying to figure out who and what this demon is but also ensuring that she doesn't lose hope in herself.

It's important to keep her attitude up by being encouraging toward her. She's an Enchantress with a powerful set of spells, and at the end of the game, she seems to be happy to come along with the player wherever they go, making her a pretty good romance option. She's also considered by many to be one of the best original characters in the game, especially since the demon inside her allows for extremely unique narrative moments that make her origin playthrough totally different in so many small and amazing ways. Regardless, players can always take some other character or create their own if they really want to romance her.

How to Romance Lohse in Divinity: Original Sin 2

Divinity Original Sin 2 Adramahlihk

Lohse's demon will first manifest itself when meeting with Saheila. During the ensuing battle, players need to not harm Saheila but instead drain Lohse's vitality enough not to kill her but trigger the next event. In Fort Joy's prison, one of the prisoners will urge the party to seek Jahan, a companion from the previous Divinity: Original Sin game.

The quest will lead players to Bloodmoon Island, where after killing The Advocate they will discover the name of the demon she's tormented by. The final battle against the demon will take place in Arx, where he will first manifest himself as the Doctor. This is easily one of the most challenging battles in the game, especially since he can take over Lohse and essentially end the battle in a few turns if certain conditions aren't met.

Fighting this battle with the Doctor at full strength is easily one of the most challenging endeavors in the game, and it's understandable if players end up lowering the difficulty during this treacherous encounter. Players can also sacrifice many innocent souls to make this fight easier, although it's only a given that a player's morals will stand in the way of this decision.

Ifan Ben-Mezd

Divinity Original Sin 2 Ifan

Ifan is a former crusader gone mercenary. He works for a group of mercenaries known as the Lone Wolves. During his service under Lucian the Divine, he was ordered to use Deathfog as a weapon, which killed countless people. It was a horrifying and eye-opening moment for Ifan, who realized that the true blight upon the world really was.

As a result, he now wants revenge against Lucian's son and generally despises the Divine. Ifan is a Wayfarer and can summon a wolf to aid him in battle. Depending on the choices players make in the end, he will either despise or love the main character. For the most part, Ifan will stick with the player through thick and thin as long as he's not insulted by the player's decision regarding the new Divine.

How to Romance Ifan in Divinity: Original Sin 2

Divinity Original Sin 2 Zaleskar

In Fort Joy, the first step to completing his quest is to speak with Zaleskar outside of the fort. In the Sanctuary of Amadia, Ifan should speak with Gareth, and aboard the Lady Vengeance, let him speak with Bishop Alexander.

At Reaper's Coast, players will be led over to a character known as Roost, who will inform them of the whereabouts of Alexander. After killing him, the contract for Alexander can be picked up on his body, and Ifan's quest is complete when he's killed. Keep in mind that if players choose to make Lucian Divine again, then Ifan will harbor a ton of hatred toward the player.

Sebille

Divinity Original Sin 2 Sebille

Sebille the rogue isn't exactly the nicest of characters out there, but her bad attitude is simply a side effect of having worked as a slave for lizards for most of her life. Sebille was controlled by a mysterious Master character that beckoned her to kill her own kind. She managed to free herself but now wants to get revenge.

She's a rogue and is ultimately the best companion to have not only because of her strong skill set but also because of how loving and loyal she is once the player gains her trust. No matter what choice they make in the end, Sebille's loyalty will lie with the main character. This is precisely what makes her character arc so amazing, and watching Sebille be vulnerable with the love of her life makes for one of the most memorable moments in the entire game. There's a reason why so many fans of the game believe that this elf is one of the best-written characters in the entire series!

How to Romance Sebille in Divinity: Original Sin 2

Divinity Original Sin 2 Shadow Prince

The main task is to reach the Master that has tormented Sebille. To begin her quest, players will need to let her meet and kill Stingtail in Fort Joy. Once they find Roost, he'll tell them that the Master is located on the Nameless Isle.

Her quest really comes to completion only after players find and kill the Shadow Prince, who's also her former Master. Finally, the player needs to destroy the mother tree on the island to allow elves to be free but also to ensure Sebille can walk away free.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is available now on PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One.
