There's a long and storied history behind Neill Blomkamp's District 9. A science-fiction story about a group of aliens stranded on Earth and forced to live in a refugee camp, District 9 was built off the repurposed props and ideas from Blomkamp's canceled Halo project and went on to become one of the better films of 2009, launching Blomkamp's directing career into the mainstream consciousness.
Since then, Blomkamp has continued to work on various films, several with a similar style and genre such as Elysium and Dev Patel's Chappie, though he never got back around to that Halo adaptation. Fans of his work have often wondered whether he would ever return to the world of District 9, and just recently there has been official word on a long-awaited sequel.
The original film followed the main character Wikus as he attempts to begin relocating the aliens, referred to as Prawns, out of District 9 to a new settlement following tensions between the camp and local humans. Unfortunately for Wikus, he ends up exposed to some alien materials and begins to mutate into a Prawn himself. This development leads to him being hunted by his own military, who want to vivisect him for their research.
In order to survive, Wikus teams up with a Prawn by the name of Christopher, who has a plan to escape Earth and contact his home-world. As the film ends, Christopher manages to escape earth, leaving Wikus and the rest of District 9 behind, and the audience is left to wonder whether he will return to rescue the others or enact revenge on the humans for the way they treated his people.
Of course, an open-ended finale like that naturally left fans speculating about what would happen next and hoping for a sequel that might answer those lingering questions. Those fans can rest easy, as Neill Blomkamp has recently Tweeted an update saying that a hypothetical District 10 is in the works, and the script is already being written, along with a slightly ominous "It's coming...." Per Blomkamp, the screenplay is being penned by Sharlto Copley, the actor who portrayed Wikus, and Terri Tatchell, who co-wrote the first District 9 film.
So naturally, the floodgates have been opened and audiences can get back to theorizing and debating what this new script will have in store for the characters and world. No information about the plot or any production plans has been dropped, but hopefully, there will be more announcements soon for the future of the Prawns and their hopes of finally leaving Earth.
