A sequel to the PSP action RPG/fighting game, Dissidia: Final Fantasy, has been announced by Square Enix. Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy is planned for a 2011 release in North America.
Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy will feature all of the characters from the original game as well as some new characters from the Final Fantasy series. Commander Kain Highwind, a Dragoon from the kingdom of Baron and childhood friend of Cecil Harvey, will join the roster from Final Fantasy IV. Tifa Lockhart, friend of Cloud Strife and member of AVALANCHE, brings her strong will and determination from the classic Final Fantasy VII. Lightning, the protagonist from the latest Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy XIII, brings her cold lone wolf attitude to the fray, and more characters will be announced in the future.
Returning characters will have a third costume and will feature new and tweaked abilities. Lightning will take advantage of the Paradigm Shift featured in Final Fantasy XIII. She will be able to switch roles between Commando, Ravager and Medic. Also, there will be an Assist feature that will allow gamers to select a second character to serve as back-up. Calling out allies during battle will result in fleeting moments of four character fighting.
Some of the other gameplay elements and details of the story, which may reveal the purpose behind the "012" in the title, are being kept under wraps by Square Enix for the time being. It is assumed that, for the most part, the gameplay will be similar to the original. However, the number of musical tracks featured in the sequel will be double that of the original game. The game's soundtrack will be arranged/composed by Takeharu Ishimoto, who was responsible for the music in the first Dissidia: Final Fantasy.
Dissidia: Final Fantasy was one of the best-selling PSP titles in 2009. The sequel will have great expectations attached to it by those who were fans of the original, and of course Final Fantasy fans in general. Those who fought in the conflict between Cosmos and Chaos will have until 2011 to anticipate the next chapter of the story.
Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy will be released in 2011 in North America on the PSP.
