The next D23 Expo, a huge Disney themed convention held every two years, will be skipping a year to be held in 2022. The decision comes after several major conventions, such as San Diego Comic-Con, made the move to online events in the wake of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

It may not immediately be clear why this is something to be disappointed about, but D23 isn't just for pin trading. Though it's a celebration of all things Disney, those things include the studio's many movie and tv-related properties. The previous event gave the world the first look at Black Widow, the cast of Marvel's Eternals film and announced Ewan MacGregor returning to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in a new series for Disney+.

The D23 Expo won't be the only major event running in 2002 as the next Star Wars Celebration will be held less than a month before on Aug 18-21, after being cancelled for this year.

Run by the official Walt Disney fanclub, the D23 Expo has become the major hub of all of Disney related announcements as well as Marvel and Star Wars properties since its launch in 2009. The name D23 refers to 1923, the year Walt Disney founded the company. A smaller sister event, D23 Japan, also runs on the same year at the Tokyo Disney Resort.

Though there's no details on what fans can expect at the next D23 Expo, the company's recent success with their streaming service Disney+ will probably feature heavily with a bigger focus on new original content for the platform. It's also likely we'll find out the company's plans for the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after several release delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent tragic death of Chadwick Boseman.

The next D23 event will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center on Sept 9 through to the 11th 2022, and more information is available on D23's website.
