Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic shutting down large public gathering spaces, theme parks including Disneyland in Anaheim, California have been inaccessible for some time. Disneyland announced its intent to reopen on July 17 earlier this month, but that plan has now changed due to the State of California holding off its theme park reopening guidelines until after July 4.

While Shanghai Disney Resort, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida have all been approved to reopen with new health and safety protocols, Disneyland does not expect to be able to lock down a new reopening date until state governmental guidelines are clear, according to a post by the Disney Parks public affairs Twitter account. However, Downtown Disney will be reopening on July 9 as previously announced because its health and safety protocols have been approved in accordance with California restaurant and retail openings.

The release put out by Disney Parks indicates it had "no choice" but to delay the reopening because of how much time it will take to bring its cast members back in, and it's fair to assume that Disney executives would like to open theme parks back up as soon as possible. In May, Disney revealed that Disneyland and Disney World have lost at least $1 billion during their forced closures.

Worldwide measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 has not only affected theme parks like Disneyland and Universal Studios, but it has also shut down productions on movies and television shows as well as live events and conventions such as E3 2020. In fact, Disney also had to reschedule its annual Star Wars Celebration, which will now take place in August 2022.

After many months of shutdowns, much of the world is beginning to open back up despite the still-present threat of the virus. Entertainment productions are starting up again for shows like Netflix's The Witcher for example, and movie theaters are being allowed to reopen — though the AMC Theaters chain will require masks, having doubled-back on its original intent to avoid being "drawn into a political controversy."

Some will undoubtedly be disappointed at having to wait for a trip to Disneyland longer than expected, but the health and safety of park-goers and workers especially are important to consider. In the meantime, fans can always visit theme park-inspired creations in Nintendo's Animal Crossing: New Horizons if they really start to feel the itch to get back to the Magic Kingdom as soon as possible.
