While plenty of Disney-owned properties are heavily featured in video games, a la Marvel and Star Wars, core Disney characters themselves often appear much fewer and farther between. This is soon to change, however, with Disney Speedstorm, an upcoming racing game which has begun to reveal its roster of characters.

Developed by Gameloft, the same creators of the Asphalt mobile racing series, Disney Speedstorm was first announced during the Nintendo Direct back in February. The title was announced via a teaser trailer, which showcased several of the iconic Disney and Pixar characters and locales players will be able to experience.

Billed as a hero-based battle racing game, Disney Speedstorm has already confirmed a variety of characters from various Disney and Pixar franchises, including Mickey Mouse, Pirates of the Caribbean's Jack Sparrow, Mulan, Sully from Monsters Inc., Goofy, and Donald Duck. It is now being confirmed that Baloo, the lovable bear from The Jungle Book, is part of the roster. The reveal was made via Disney Speedstorm's official Twitter account, which includes a short clip of Baloo dancing.

Baloo is the latest Brawler to be revealed for the roster, with the only other Brawler confirmation currently being Donald Duck. Disney Speedstorm features four distinct character classes, each with their own unique set of skills: Brawler, Trickster, Speedster, and Defender. While what those skills exactly consist of have yet to be revealed, each character's stats will be completely upgradeable. It's a similar case for the game's vehicles, which will have interchangeable components. However, it appears Disney Speedstorm lacks themed carts, which many fans believe is a missed opportunity for IP as imaginative as Disney and Pixar.

Disney Speedstorm will also receive regular seasonal updates, adding new racers, tracks and collectibles. A free-to-play title, the upcoming cart racer looks like it's trying to give Mario Kart 8 Deluxe some competition. The latest entry in the iconic Nintendo racing franchise is now getting regular seasonal updates of its own, albeit through the paid Booster Course Pass. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Booster Course Pass includes 48 tracks released through the end of 2023, meaning Disney Speedstorm has some serious ground to cover, although its plethora of material to mine from should make it fairly easy.

With a vast array of characters and locales to choose from, and a unique twist in upgradeable skills and distinct classes, Disney Speedstorm may have the capacity to become the next massively-played free-to-play title.

Disney Speedstorm will be available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
