With less than two weeks until the game’s release, most figured that the roster for Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes (2.0 Edition) was all locked up. That is, until Disney starts announcing expansion plans for their toys to life title.
In a surprise last minute announcement, however, Disney Infinity has added two more characters to its roster, both of which have strong ties to the Marvel movie brand. Yondu from Guardians of the Galaxy and Falcon from Captain America are the latest to join Disney Infinity and will be available some time next year.
Yondu, as some may know, is one of the original members of the Guardians of the Galaxy team, back before Star Lord and Rocket Raccoon were on-board. However, this particular iteration of Yondu is designed like the one featured in the Guardians feature film.
He still retains some of his trademark comic book elements, like the glowing red Mohawk and the use of arrows (only this one is whistle controlled), but he’s obviously not a main player. Even so, Yondu will be playable in the Guardians of the Galaxy Play Set, though, and in Toy Box 2.0.
Also joining the Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes roster is Falcon (a.k.a. Sam Wilson). Falcon is, of course, one of the oldest allies of Captain America and a member of the Avengers team. He’s been around in the comics for decades but was just recently introduced to the film universe in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
For Disney Infinity, however, Avalanche Software has decided to go with a more traditional design for Falcon. Most will remember him wearing military style gear in The Winter Soldier, but Infinity‘s version sports the classic red and white, albeit with the feathered wings and goggles that most with recognize. Falcon will be playable in the Avengers Play Set and Toy Box 2.0.
In addition to figures, Yondu and Falcon are also available as Disney Infinity power discs, tiny discs that you put underneath the Infinity figurine to give them some sort of power boost. In Yondu’s case, the power disc will unlock the character as an ally who fights alongside the player, whereas for Falcon, the disc unlocks the use of his wings for any character.
It’s nice to see that although Disney Infinity 2.0 is going for some obvious choices with their Marvel Super Heroes roster – Loki, Green Goblin, Thor, Captain America – they are also pulling some more obscure names as well. Granted, characters like Falcon or Yondu or Iron Fist are not totally obscure to the average Marvel fan, but someone who only knows the films may not be familiar with them.
And that’s what, personally, makes the Disney Infinity games so appealing. Yes, they have the Toy Box creation mode and the cool Play Sets featuring Spider-Man and Iron Man, but getting to play around with unexpected characters from the Marvel or Disney universe is just as appealing.
What do you think of Yondu and Falcon joining Disney Infinity 2.0 Edition? What other Marvel characters do you hope join the fold?
Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes (2.0 Edition) releases September 23, 2014 for current-gen and last-gen platforms.
