‘Guardians of the Galaxy’: First Impressions of Disney Infinity 2.0’s New Play Set

By | 2 years ago

As with any Comic-Con, it’s a big week for Marvel Studios and parent company Disney who are out in full force with a packed movie, TV, and video game slate. One of Disney’s major showpieces for the video game side of things is Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes (2.0 Edition), which has a full week’s worth of announcements planned for the event.

Even before the show floor opened, Disney announced the Guardians of the Galaxy Play Set, which includes all core members of the Guardians troop (Star Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Groot, and Rocket Raccoon) in their own Infinity adventure. We went hands-on with the new Play Set at Disney Infinity’s special off-site space.

From a design perspective, the Guardians of the Galaxy Play Set is exactly what fans hope it to be. Each Guardians figure represents a mix between the cinematic incarnations of these characters and their comic book counterparts – with a slight Disney Infinity twist of course. If you’re a fan of the Infinity figures or the Guardians of the Galaxy characters, know that this Play Set delivers worthy additions to the growing set.

Gameplay in the Play Set takes players to Knowhere, one of the key locales in the Guardians comics. Star Lord & Co. have stolen the infinity gem and Ronan the Accuser is in hot pursuit, trying to stop them from bringing the gem to The Collector. Once, they arrive on Knowhere, however, players are set loose on an open world (of sorts) space station where they can complete dozens of tasks.

As you might expect, each Guardian has his or her or its own unique combat and traversal options. Star Lord uses his dual laser blasters and boost jets, Gamora has twin blades, Rocket brandishes overlarge laser machine guns, Drax has blades of his own, and Groot lets his roots do the damage. Each character isn’t markedly different from the other in terms of combat, but in co-op situations players will find the right combinations. Each character plays well and fits their comic book persona well.

What we got to play of the Guardians of the Galaxy Play Set fit the bill nicely for a space adventure featuring these up-and-coming Marvel characters. The missions we got to play were fairly linear, but packed with a surprising amount of story – enough to leave us wanting more. But really the main selling point of this Play Set will be the beautifully detailed figures and their virtual counterparts.

That being said, it’s worth noting that Disney Interactive has upgraded the Infinity suite to include more involved gameplay options (skill trees, crossover characters, etc.). Make sure to read our E3 preview for more on the how the game compares to Disney Infinity 1 (read our review), but know that Disney Interactive has listened to fans’ feedback and wants to build a better game. Oh, and with a unique cast of Marvel characters in this new game, Disney is poised to make a killing with this one.

What do you think of the new Guardians of the Galaxy Play Set? Which characters do you most want to play as?

Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes (2.0 Edition) releases fall 2014 for PC, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
