Disney Infinity 3.0 Shows Off First The Force Awakens Figures

By | 1 year ago

Over the past few years, toys-to-life products like Skylanders and Amiibo have proven to do great business, so long as the company producing the game has an appropriate cast of characters to build from. In that regard, it’s no surprise that Disney Infinity has quickly risen to the top of its genre.

Disney Infinity started strong, with a broad selection of characters from Disney’s iconic stable of movies. With its first major expansion, the addition of Marvel superheroes to the mix really demonstrated the company’s greatest advantage over its rivals; a huge variety of intellectual property to call upon.

This year, Disney looks poised to once again expand the game’s audience by integrating the Star Wars universe into Disney Infinity 3.0. With The Force Awakens releasing just months after the game itself, Disney is set to take full advantage of Star Wars fever when it sets in later this year.

At the D23 expo over the weekend, actors John Boyega and Daisy Ridley were on hand to show off the figurines that will represent their characters from The Force Awakens in Disney Infinity. Some fans in attendance were even given pre-release figures to take home.

Much like this year’s Star Wars Battlefront, Disney Infinity 3.0 is set to feature content from the classic Star Wars movies as well as ties to the upcoming trilogy of films. That means you’ll see the likes of Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi, but Boyega and Ridley’s Finn and Rey will make appearances, too.

There’s been a great deal of speculation among Star Wars fans regarding these two characters, as neither has had their last name revealed yet — which might suggest family ties to established characters. Perhaps tellingly, the event saw Boyega posing with a fan dressed as Vader, while Ridley was joined by a Princess Leia cosplayer.

A special line of Star Wars figures that light up when placed on the Infinity base unit were revealed at the event. Models of characters from upcoming Disney movies Zootopia and The Good Dinosaur were also shown, although it’s likely that they won’t join the game for quite some time.

Disney Infinity certainly has an impressive cast of characters, but it will be interesting to see what’s done to keep things fresh from here on out. There’s nothing left in reserve that measures up to Star Wars or Marvel — but continued updates to the IPs in the game from here could extend the title’s lifespan for years to come.

Disney Infinity 3.0 will release for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U and PC on August 28, 2015.
