The Royal Shovel is one of the four Royal Tools in Disney Dreamlight Valley, and a key component to both progressing through the game's many quests and gathering resources needed for crafting. While the primary use of the shovel is to dig holes that can then be used for gardening, it also has the ability to remove certain obstacles, making the valley both easier to traverse and prettier to look at. Before it can remove obstacles, however, players must complete certain quests to upgrade it. There are currently three different upgrades to the Royal Shovel, with each making it more versatile than the last.

Disney Dreamlight Valley is still in early access, so it should be said that there may eventually be even more upgrades available for the shovel and the other Royal Tools in the future. For example, when the early access first began, two of these upgrades for the shovel weren't in the game yet, only having been included alongside the addition of Scar in the Sunlit Plateau.

How to Break Stumps in the Forest of Valor

Tree stumps can be found throughout the valley with no apparent way to clear them, but they become more of a nuissance after reaching the Forest of Valor where they block access to the second half of the area. In order to remove them, players need to get Anna to move back to Dreamlight Valley by completing the Frozen Realm. From here, complete her level 2 friendship quest titled "An Ice Invitation" and the shovel will be able to break the bothersome tree stumps.

How to Break Wildebeest Bones in the Sunlit Plateau

The mysterious bones in the Sunlit Plateau were previously unbreakable, but by completing Scar's friendship quests, players can upgrade their shovel and remove them once and for all. First, players need to unlock Scar and complete his story quest. This includes watering the Orb of Nurturing until it is fully grown. After this, players need to complete Scar's level 3 friendship quest titled "Breaking Bones," as this will unlock the ability to break the small bones in the Sunlit Plateau. Finally, get Scar to level 7 and complete "The Circle of Life" to upgrade the shovel again so it can break the large bones.

Upgrading the shovel so that it can break bones not only makes it much easier to get around in the Sunlit Plateau, it's also a great source of clay. This should make gathering all the clay needed for the infamous Minnie clocktower quest much quicker, so it's a win-win situation. If future updates add new biomes and new obstacles, there may be yet more uses for the shovel in the near future.

Disney Dreamlight Valley is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
