As players make their way through Disney Dreamlight Valley, they will come across all sorts of materials. Some have very clear and obvious uses, like vegetables and fish being used for cooking. Some materials, however, are not so clear in what their purpose is.

It isn't long before players encounter two of these materials. The first is Dream Shard, and the second one is Night Shard. The description of these two materials is vague and doesn't provide much detail, but this guide will help players understand how to get more of these materials and what they are used for.

Updated on February 24th, 2023, by Paul Woodward: Disney Dreamlight Valley has come a long way since it first entered Early Access back in September 2022. As such, numerous quality-of-life changes have been made to all sorts of aspects of the game. One thing in particular that has changed is drop rates for obtaining Dream Shards and Night Shards. While originally Dream Shards were very difficult to get (to the point where Gameloft had to send some to players in the mail as they were progression blocked by the low drop rate), they have since seen an increase in drop rate along with Night Shards. There is also a new way to get Night Shards as well.

How to Get Night Shards

Night Shards can be obtained from spots where Disney Dreamlight Valley players can use their shovel. These spots are marked by what appear to be glowing mounds. Just like with the various resources throughout Disney Dreamlight Valley, these spots do regenerate after a while. So players won't have to wait long for more of these to spawn. Night Shards can spawn in all the various biomes that make up Dreamlight Valley.

Alternatively, players can acquire Night Shards through crafting by using Onyx. A single piece of Onyx can be converted into three Night Shards. If players have run out of spots to dig and Night Thorns to destroy, converting Onyx into Night Shards is a viable option as well.

How to Get Dream Shards

Dream Shards have a chance of spawning when Disney Dreamlight Valley players clear out Night Thorns. At the start of the game, there are Night Thorns everywhere, so players will have plenty of opportunities to gather this material. Night Thorns respawn at random locations every day, so players will never run out permanently.

Disney Dreamlight Valley players should be aware that in spite of how many Night Thorns there are, the drop rate for Dream Shards is low. While the drop rate is significantly better than it was at the start of Early Access, it will still take time for players to gather Dream Shards. Like with Night Shards, Dream Shards can be found in any part of Dreamlight Valley that Night Thorns grow in.

What are Dream Shards and Night Shards Used For?

Dream Shards and Night Shards can be used in crafting. Both materials can be crafted into an item called Purified Night Shard. Disney Dreamlight Valley players can give Purified Night Shards to their Disney friends as a gift. Dream Shards can also be crafted into Dreamlight, which is a currency used in a lot of Story Quest objectives and also allows players to open new areas of Dreamlight Valley once they have gotten far enough into the story.

While Dream Shards aren't as rare as they used to be, they are still time-consuming to replenish, it is highly recommended that players use them in crafting sparingly.

Night Shards and Dream Shards can also be used as gifts for the Disney characters in the game. Players should check what the daily interests of their Disney friends are, as those listed items are a great (and efficient) way to increase Friendship Levels quickly.

While it isn't a recommended option, both Night Shards and Dream Shards can be sold for Star Coins. While Night Shards are easy to get, there are better options for farming Star Coins. So it is recommended that players just stick to crafting either Purified Night Shards or Dreamlight.

Disney Dreamlight Valley is available now on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
