Increasing Friendship Levels with the various Disney characters throughout Disney Dreamlight Valley provides a great deal of rewards and benefits, aside from unlocking more Friendship Quests. Mostly, the bonuses from leveling up are cosmetic rewards and Star Coins. One of the first things that players will unlock is Companion Roles.

While it may seem insignificant given how early that Disney Dreamlight Valley players unlock it, Companion Roles are one of the most impactful rewards from a gameplay standpoint. With a bit of planning and forethought, players will be able to get a great deal of benefit from assigning Roles to their Disney friends.

What Are Companion Roles?

Upon reaching Friendship Level 2 with one of the villagers, Disney Dreamlight Valley players will be prompted to select one of five Roles for their friend. The five Roles are Gardening, Fishing, Mining, Foraging, and Digging. As players will likely notice, these roles all represent the various activities players can do around the Valley (excluding cooking and crafting, of course). The basic premise of these Roles is that they provide a chance for players to gain additional resources. Players should know, however, that this is not a passive bonus and needs to be activated.

How Do Companion Roles Work?

After reaching Friendship Level 2 and choosing a Role for a character, Disney Dreamlight Valley players will see a new option appear whenever they talk to that character. Listed underneath the usual choices is the option to say: "Let's Hang Out!". The character, Moana being the example in the image above, will then follow players wherever they go, even if they are wandering aimlessly and collecting some Hardwood. While this character is hanging out with players, there will be a small icon in the lower right-hand corner of the screen that indicates the Companion Role is active.

Once accompanied by the friend of their choice, players have a chance at getting bonus resources whenever they participate in an activity that matches the Role of their friend. For example, if players choose Fishing as the Role for Moana, then fish will occasionally spawn on the ground for players to pick up as a bonus if they successfully catch something. The accompanying companion will also get a small amount of progress toward the next Friendship Level as well. Companion Roles, unfortunately, have no effect on Energy.

Can the Chance For Bonus Resources Be Improved?

As the Friendship Level goes higher, the greater the chance of getting a bonus item. So while hanging out with their favorite Disney character, Disney Dreamlight Valley players will also be getting more materials that they need. Especially when that Disney character is at a higher Friendship Level.

Are There Any Limitations To Which Roles Can Be Selected?

While there is no way to reset the Role once it has been chosen, Disney Dreamlight Valley players should keep in mind that there are no limitations to what Roles can be selected for each character. While it would make sense for Moana to be given the Fishing Role, she doesn't get any extra bonuses if players select that Role for her. Players can also give her the Digging (which would be a good way to get more Night Shards) or Mining Role and still have a chance at getting extra items when doing those activities with her.

So, since characters are not limited to which of the five Roles they can take on, players can assign them however they wish. Though it is recommended that Disney Dreamlight Valley players have every Role assigned so that there is always someone they can hang out with and get extra items. Since gathering resources is vital for both crafting, cooking, and certain quests, having fully leveled Companion Roles will be helpful.

Disney Dreamlight Valley is available now on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
