Last year’s award-winning RPG Disco Elysium won’t stay exclusive to PC, as it was announced back in April that a Switch port of Disco Elysium is in development. Since then, developer ZA/UM has provided no update on when it might come out, but until that finally happens, fans can start playing the game on another Nintendo system: the Game Boy.

Created by Graphic Designer Colin Brannan, Disco Elysium: Game Boy Edition is more than just a version of the game meant to look and feel like an old-school Game Boy title. The ROM for the port is available to download from Itch.io, meaning anyone with an adaptive cartridge can actually play it on the original Nintendo handheld. What’s more, the game can also be played on a browser for those who don’t have a Game Boy lying around.

Due to the technical constraints of the Game Boy, this version simplifies a number of Disco Elysium’s tabletop RPG-inspired elements. The 24 skills players could roll in the PC version have been condensed into four categories that give players +1 to a skill’s cap with each failed roll, while successful rolls provide +1 skill point if players aren’t at the cap. Furthermore, the Game Boy Edition currently only contains the first part of the game’s 60+ hour story, which fans can see in action via a gameplay video from IGN.

It’s not immediately clear if Brannan intends to port any more of the game to the Game Boy, but what’s currently available should nevertheless be welcomed by fans awaiting the console port and the upcoming TV adaptation of Disco Elysium.

Disco Elysium is available for PC. A Switch version is in development.
