DIRT 5 players who buy the game on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to PlayStation 5 for free, a leaked trailer has revealed. The trailer, which has since been taken down, let slip the upgrade plans in its YouTube description. DIRT 5 is already confirmed to support Microsoft's "Smart Delivery" program, which means that Xbox One players who buy a Xbox Series X will also be able to upgrade for free.

Despite its title, DIRT 5 is actually the eighth DIRT game, and the fourteenth in Codemaster's Colin McRae Rally series. According to the developers, DIRT 5 will represent a return to the series' roots. This means a focus on arcade-style races, with plenty of jostling between cars and high-speed collisions.

DIRT 5's career mode will feature a series of rally events scattered across a wide range of locations, including Arizona, Brazil, China, Italy, New York, and Norway. Seasons will pass as the game progresses, unlocking new events with the changing weather. For example, ice racing will only be available during the winter months.

The game is being developed by Codemasters Cheshire, the UK-based studio formerly known as Codemasters Evo. The studio is perhaps best known for its less-than-successful OnRush car-combat game, which saw many lay-offs following its poor release.

DIRT 5 will be released on October 9, 2020 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, later in 2020 on PS5 and Xbox Series X, and in 2021 on Stadia.
