With the start of October, many people are beginning to decorate for Halloween. While some decorate for the holiday in real life, many video games are celebrating the spooky season with Halloween-themed updates as well. One game that is getting into the ghostly spirit is Dirt 5.

Dirt 5 is the newest installment in the car racing series. Developed by Codemasters, the game was released on several platforms at the end of last year. With an emphasis on off-road racing, players get to experience several different styles of racing including rallycross, ice racing, Stadium Super Trucks, and off-road buggies. In addition to these different modes, the racing simulator features many different locations such as China, New York City, and Brazil. While the game received the Wild Spirits update in September, the developers just added another batch of new content in time for the Halloween season.

Recently, a new trailer was released showing off spooky new content for Dirt 5. This Halloween update comes as part of the “Tricks N Treats” Playgrounds pack. This update is live now and free for all players that own the game on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. The developer noted that the Playgrounds content is expected to come to Google Stadia in the future.

This new update adds several new ghoulish features to Dirt 5’s Playgrounds, a track creation tool. According to Codemasters, the new update brings Halloween-themed start gates, finish gates, and “checkpoints with flickering flames and sinister signage.” Furthermore, there is a haunted house that glows green at night along with spooky decorations like bell towers, pumpkins, wells, and gargoyles. When creating the new content, the developers noted that they took inspiration from “classic horror setups” as well as based their designs on gothic Victorian architecture.

While players can use these spooky track decorations to create custom courses, the mode allows players to race on other maps created by the community using these new items as well. It will be interesting to see what type of tracks creative members of the Dirt 5 community come up with over the Halloween season.

In addition to the Playgrounds pack, the developers released a new patch aimed at optimizations and improvements to environmental lighting. Some of the upgrades to the lighting system include enhancements to general light, shade, and reflections. The developers commented that this should improve the realism of scenery, especially during night racing. Furthermore, the patch addressed issues with game crashes along with fixes for audio.

Besides this new update for Dirt 5, many other games are potentially receiving updates for Halloween. New Apex Legends leaks suggest that a Halloween-themed event is coming to the battle royale with new cosmetics. In addition, a rumored Halloween event for Call of Duty: Warzone is possible for later this month.

Dirt 5 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
