Dirt 5 was announced recently at the May Xbox 20/20 event. While the Xbox event drew a mixed reception, players were generally impressed by the look of the latest racing game which will be optimized for the Xbox Series X but coming to other platforms. While many were impressed with its 120 FPS visuals and the resulting aesthetic, there was also good news for fans of career mode racing, particularly in the acting department.

The Dirt franchise began in 1998 and focused on rally driving alongside a partnership with Scottish driver Colin McRae. Many games like Dirt Rally 2.0 had solid reviews, although it has changed significantly since the start. It still retains that specific identity, though, which may be changing up with the next game. While many racing games have an inconsistent story, the developer, Codemasters is employing a talented cast to bulk out the 'Take Career' mode and deliver a satisfying experience.

In an interview after the preview of Dirt 5, representatives spoke about the “star-studded cast, led by legendary Troy Baker and Nolan North” and added that racing fans can expect some recognizable voices to feature in the career mode. Troy Baker is known for his roles as Sam Drake in the Uncharted games, as well as Joel in The Last of Us 2 amongst many more titles. Nolan North, who is perhaps best known as Nathan Drake in the Uncharted titles, will also feature in the career mode. As such, many will have high hopes for the career mode in Dirt 5.

There had been speculation about Dirt 5 before this announcement, and the trailer appears to have delivered on the early anticipation and built on it. It will be interesting to see how the game focuses on online gameplay and a career mode as this can be a tough juggling act for a lot of arcade racing style games. Nonetheless, it seems that the team has employed the talent to deliver the story and many will hope that the narrative carries enough weight to be interesting.

With the promise of unique driving experience in every race, many players will be keen to see whether this game can compete with the best racing games. If the game delivers on its career and online elements, it could be another hit in the Dirt franchise.

Dirt 5 will be released in 2021 on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
