Digimon Survive is a new tactical role-playing game and visual novel hybrid set in a world that the main characters have a hard time deciphering, where dangerous monsters and life-threatening events are everywhere. This story-driven game has many survival elements that fuse with a choice-based system that allows players to impact what happens to the creatures and characters around them. Although it may seem like Digimon Survive doesn't feature many critters at the offset, players will quickly come to understand that there are many species and branching evolutions hiding everywhere.

Some Digimon only evolve under specific circumstances that require story or character development, such as if a given character dies, whereas other creatures simply require resources and time investment. Digimon Survive also allows players to befriend some creatures they encounter along the way, which can even happen in the middle of a battle by talking things out with an enemy, turning it into an unexpected ally.

Child Digimon are those creatures who have evolved past their Baby form, with an example coming from the tutorial's own Koromon - the small, friendly monster that Takuma encounters - which eventually becomes Agumon. Baby Digimon are more often portrayed in the anime than in games, and Digimon Survive doesn't focus on them as much, making the Child level the most common for the main protagonists of the RPG. Child-level Digimon are also those with the most options for evolution, as they more often than not have at least a couple of branching paths to explore.
