Battlefield 2042 suffered from what most considered an incredibly rocky launch. With glitches and bugs being rife throughout the game and changes to the core gameplay, it was enough to turn many away from DICE's latest shooter. The game has seen so many players leave that Battlefield 2042 is currently being outperformed by three older Battlefield titles on Steam. With Battlefield 2042 being a few months old now, and little having changed in terms of fans' opinion on the game, many are hoping Battlefield's future can offer a better experience.

It's not just gamers that are hoping the upcoming Battlefield game will do better than Battlefield 2042 either. Developer of the Battlefield series, DICE, has recently revealed in an interview that it there were some missteps with Battlefield 2042, and that the studio will be looking to improve on the many problems fans pointed out. According to DICE, the initial plan for the next Battlefield game, which has already entered pre-production, would be to use Battlefield 2042 as a foundation for its successor.

Those plans have quickly changed following the public reception to Battlefield 2042 though. No longer will the latest entry in the Battlefield franchise be used as a foundation, and plans are also diverting from creating a Battlefield hero shooter, in line with other first-person-shooters like Call of Duty and Overwatch. It seems that Battlefield 2042's specialists are one of the major issues that DICE is focusing on, as both the developer and publisher EA are conducting play tests to better tie the roles to the classes that appeared in Battlefield games prior to 2042.

So far, DICE has spoken little on the disastrous launch of Battlefield 2042, rather it appears more focused on the elements of gameplay that players didn't like, such as the specialists and other changes instead of the bugs and glitches that plagued the game's release. Though, Battlefield launches have often been full of problems, such as the poorly-received launch of Battlefield 4, so it may be that DICE would rather focus on specific problems with the newest game instead of trying to fix issues the franchise has had for years.

This is not to say that DICE is entirely abandoning the latest Battlefield though, as new patches are being released in order to keep Battlfield 2042 at some level of functionality. However, it does seem that DICE would rather start fresh than try to redeem Battlefield 2042 in some way. There's hope for fans who prefer the earlier titles though, as it seems DICE has recognized copying hero shooters and creating all new mechanics may not always pay off.

Battlefield 2042 is available right now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
