Gamers have a lot to look forward to in the next year. With a possible November release date of Battlefield 3 making its way onto the internet as well as a large number of other AAA titles launching in and around that month as evidenced by the most recent Game Ranter Banter discussion, there just won't be enough time to play through every "big" game that releases.

It's for that reason that DICE, the developers of Battlefield 3 are doing everything they can to ensure that gamers get the most enjoyable experience out of their game as possible and, following our PAX East 2011 impressions of the game, it's well on its way to blowing away the competition.

In a recent interview with EDGE regarding Battlefield 3's campaign changes, DICE executive producer Patrick Bach stated that:

"I don’t see it as an absolute goal for all games to be sandbox games. We’ve been building sandbox games for quite some time and we’ve got pretty good at it, but I don’t see that as the only way of building games, because then we wouldn’t build campaigns at all. In some cases they aren’t, but in most cases sandbox games are hardcore, boring, hard to get into and they are not very popular."

While there will definitely be some gamers who will be up in arms regarding the shift from an open-ended campaign to that of a more linear, scripted one, the change will not only allow for more cinematic moments, but will also give the gamer a stronger feeling of immediacy as they are always in the midst of danger rather than spending needless amounts of time traveling from point A to point B.

This shift could also be viewed as an attempt to compete with the Call Of Duty series which has a commanding hold on the current first-person shooter market and shows no sign of letting go. Regardless, the idea to focus in on the particular battles and intensify them rather than letting the player roam free seems like it will be a welcome addition, but in the context of the Battlefield series, only time will tell as to whether it fits or not.

Will you be picking up Battlefield 3 when it launches later this year? Does the shift to a more focused, linear campaign interest you?

Battlefield 3 releases on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 this fall.
