One of the features of the Diablo franchise that keeps gamers coming back is the lore and characters. It started with a simple hack-and-slash fantasy-horror story about good versus evil that evolved into something more complicated as the series progressed.

The lore of Diablo is complex and detailed, and that's partly why some of the story threads are still hanging, waiting to be picked up in the next installment of the franchise. The playing field now includes more players from the High Heavens and Lilith herself has been released from the Void, so perhaps some of the following questions will finally have answers.

7 The Prime Evils

Diablo (1)-5

Not who are they or what are they, but where are they? The Great Evils are seven demons, divided into two different groups, the three Prime Evils and four Lesser Evils. Players are already familiar with the story of the Civil War in Hell between these two groups and how it ended with the Dark Exile, which trapped the Prime Evils in Sanctuary.

Diablo, one of the Prime Evils, escaped his prison under Tristram Cathedral by possessing the body of Aidan and then Leah. They were eventually trapped in the Back Soulstone, but this was shattered and the pieces were scattered throughout Sanctuary and freed from Diablo. Were the evils destroyed as well, or is that even possible?

6 The Fate Of Leah

Tyrael being called in the High Heavens - Diablo Archangel Trivia

The story of Diablo 3 ended on a tragic note when Leah became the vessel of Diablo and had to be destroyed. Her mother Aidan is usually seen as the villain, conspiring with the Prime Evil Diablo to produce his human vessel, which is why the story takes a sour note when the player has to destroy Leah at the end.

Her life and death seem to mark Diablo's story changing to a more nuanced one as opposed to a simple good versus evil. It's an important detail her body was never found, however, so there are still some questions remaining as to her ultimate fate.

5 The Resurrection Of Inarius

Most players are already familiar with this story that explains both the Nephalem and the existence of Sanctuary. After the angel fell in battle, Lilith resurrected him, and together the two of them created a third option between Heaven and Hell, Sanctuary.

However, it wasn't Lilith's intention to revive the angel and she doesn't understand how she did it, or that she even had that ability. Her father is Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred and one of the Prime Evils on the same level as Diablo, and he has never demonstrated such power either. How did Lilith resurrect an Angel, and does this have anything to do with why she was called from the Void at the beginning of Diablo 4?

4 The Crystal Arch

Crystal Arch in High Heavens serve as the Spine of Anu - Diablo Archangel Trivia

The story of the Crystal Arch begins with the god Anu, the main creator-god of the Diablo universe. He began creation when he separated from the ultimate evil force, Tathamet, and their battle at the beginning of time made the realms of Heaven and Hell.

The Crystal Arch, which is one of the oldest structures in the entire Diablo franchise, is one of Anu's spine bones, and this mysterious structure is where Angels are born. There are a finite number of Angels, so a new one can only be created when one of the others was destroyed. This is only a legend so far, however, even though Angels have fallen, a new one has never been created.

3 The World Of Sanctuary

The next installment in the Diablo franchise will feature some new locations outside of Sanctuary that are neither Heaven nor Hell, and players are looking forward to the unraveling of this mystery. There must be more to the realm of Diablo than the realms of the High Heavens and the Burning Hells, and it turns out only a small part of Sanctuary has been revealed so far.

There are five new zones that players can explore all within the world of Sanctuary, and although they've appeared n the lore players haven't been able to visit them in the games yet. They vary in theme, climate, and culture, and exploring them will probably uncover even more mysteries.

2 Who Is Andariel?

Andariel Diablo Art

In the games, Andariel is the boss on the fourth level of the Catacombs in Diablo 3. In the lore, she is the only female among the Lesser Evils and is also known as the Maiden of Anguish and

the Demon Queen, and although her fate is more or less sealed within the Black Soulstone, the story is unclear as to her ultimate purpose.

Andariel was an important character throughout Diablo 3 and was sealed within the Black Soulstone and merged with Diablo as the other Evils had. Since the stone was destroyed, however, it's possible that Andarie has separated from Diablo and waits to meet another fate.

1 The Role Of Lilith

Diablo 4 Lilith Close Up Face

Lilith was just the Queen of the Succubi until she inadvertently resurrected a soldier of the High Heavens. Against all odds, the angel and the demon found they had common ground as to the endless and seemingly pointless war of Heaven versus Hell. Together they created Sanctuary but a whole new race of beings, the Nephalem.

After this point, however, Inarius and Lilith parted ways over the ultimate use of Sanctuary and the angel banished his former lover to the Void. She was brought back in a chilling and gruesome ritual that's the subject of a memorable trailer for Diablo 4, but for what reason? And do her designs involve the Nephalem or Inarius?
