Diablo 4 will be missing a classic action RPG feature found in the franchise’s past. While Diablo 4 could technically get this feature later on, it is unlikely Blizzard will add it after launch.

The recent open beta for Diablo 4 saw record-breaking attendance. Blizzard has since analyzed the best and worst parts of the beta, and has revealed several changes Diablo 4 will make based on player feedback. Fans can expect class balances, quality-of-life improvements, and even a change to the typeface used in some parts of the game.

However, it seems like one unpopular feature from the Diablo 4 beta won’t be changing any time soon. Many players were not happy with the minimap presented in the game. Some fans hoped Diablo 4 would eventually add an overlay map like the one available in Diablo 2. Unfortunately, senior vice president and Diablo head Rod Fergusson confirmed Blizzard currently has no plans to implement such a change in the new title.

Toggleable, transparent overlay maps are a genre standard feature for many ARPGs. The feature was cut from Diablo 3, but the minimap itself was enlarged and made transparent to facilitate its removal. The minimap in Diablo 4 is the smallest one in the series yet, and is more opaque than its predecessors. With few options to enlarge or customize the minimap in Diablo 4, players will have to adjust to the new system of navigation.

A lot of players aren’t happy Diablo 4 isn’t adding an overlay map for the game’s release. The feature was sorely missed in Diablo 3, and many hoped it would return for the sequel. With the vast open world of Diablo 4, an overlay map would make navigation much easier. Though it could clog up the screen during combat, having it as an option would only benefit the game. Many hope Diablo 4 will consider adding this feature in the future, unlikely as it is.

As inconvenient as it might be, the lack of an overlay map seems to be one of only a few complaints players have with Diablo 4. The game may not be perfect, but it seems to be pretty close. Diablo 4 has already gone gold, despite its release being over a month away. With the hype still high after the beta, it is clear Diablo 4’s launch is going to be huge, and that the game has a serious shot at Game of the Year.

Diablo 4 will release on June 6 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
