In the action RPG Diablo 4, players will need to collect items, materials, weapons, and armor in order to improve their characters. As they explore the map of Sanctuary, players will want to pick up as many Murmuring Obols as possible.

This in-game currency is an important part of ensuring a player's character can buy whatever they want from the Purveyor of Curiosities. To get as many of these Obols as possible, players will need to know how to get them, where to buy them, and how to farm them.

Updated on June 3, 2023: Now that Diablo 4 is out of its beta period and finally in the hands of fans all over the world, we've cleaned up this guide to reflect the full launch. This guide will show players how to get Murmuring Obols and what can be purchased with them.

What are Murmuring Obols?

Murmuring Obols are a currency that can only be used at the Purveyor of Curiosities. These vendors will be located in major cities in Sanctuary and will be denoted on the map with a little moneybag icon. Players can exchange Murmuring Obols for a random weapon or armor or buy Whispering Keys with them. These Obols can only be spent on the item lottery and nothing else, so players won't have to worry about spending their in-game gold on gambling.

When purchasing items from the shop, players choose the type of item they want to buy, and then the shop will give a random item of that kind. The rarity of the item and its stats will be completely random; players can get anything from a common to a legendary Diablo 4 weapon, armor, or jewelry. The only item without random stats is the Whispering Key, which unlocks Silent Chests in the wild. Here are all the items that can be purchased with Murmuring Obols:

  • Amulet: 60 Obols
  • Axe (One-Handed): 50 Obols
  • Axe (Two-Handed): 75 Obols
  • Boots: 25 Obols
  • Bow: 75 Obols
  • Cap: 40 Obols
  • Crossbow: 75 Obols
  • Dagger: 50 Obols
  • Focus: 40 Obols
  • Gloves: 25 Obols
  • Hammer: 75 Obols
  • Mace: 50 Obols
  • Pants: 40 Obols
  • Polearm: 75 Obols
  • Ring: 40 Obols
  • Staff: 75 Obols
  • Sword (One-Handed): 50 Obols
  • Sword (Two-Handed): 75 Obols
  • Tunic: 40 Obols
  • Wand: 50 Obols
  • Whispering Key: 20 Obols

Players can hold a total of 500 Obols at first, but they can expand that inventory account-wide by heading to Altars of Lilith. While most Altars upgrade a player's HP or stats, a percentage of these grant a +5 boost to the total number of Obols that can be held. Another way to raise the number of Obols that can be held is through zone renown rewards.

Obols can be picked up almost anywhere in Sanctuary. Players can find them in chests and can pick them up from dungeons. The best place to farm this currency is in World Events. These events can be found all over the map, but some of these in the Fractured Peaks are:

Players will earn Obols with each completed Diablo 4 World Event, but more Obols will be rewarded if the Mastery goal is reached.

What are Murmuring Caches in Diablo 4?

Murmuring Caches in Diablo 4 are containers with 50 Obols in them. These will not count toward a player's total number of Obols, so players should avoid opening them if they are close to their Murmuring Obol cap.

So if players have a cap of 500 Obols, and they currently have 475 Obols in their inventory, opening a Cache would make them lose 25 Obols. It's best to hold onto these until players can stop by the Purveyor of Curiosities.

Diablo 4 is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
