When out in the dangerous world of Sanctuary, Diablo 4 players will most likely come across some Silent Chests. These chests can be found just about anywhere and can be filled with some very good items. However, they are locked and can only be unlocked with an item called Whispering Keys.
These keys can only be purchased from one vendor in the cities of Sanctuary, and players will want to find these vendors as quickly as possible to keep from missing out on the loot inside each Silent Chest.
Updated June 2, 2023, by Mina Smith: Now that Diablo 4 is available for most players, an update needed to be made to this article. It now includes the locations of all the Purveyor of Curiosities vendors across Sanctuary.
Where to Buy Whispering Keys in Diablo 4
There is only one type of vendor that sells Whispering Keys in Diablo 4: Purveyor of Curiosities vendors. There are eight of these shops in Diablo 4; they are in basically every major city. These locations are:
- Kyovashad: The NPC's name is Lizveth; look southeast of the fast travel Waypoint.
- Yelesna: The NPC's name is Rodyar; look near the Inn.
- Exile's Heap, near the Backwater Waypoint
- Zarbinzet: Close to the southern entrance.
- Gea Kul: Along the northernmost wall.
- Jirandai Waypoint: Head south to find this Purveyor
- Ked Bardu: Head north from the Waypoint until players are near the outer wall of the town.
- Cerrigar: A little south of the Waypoint.
Whispering Keys can be purchased from these vendors with 20 Murmuring Obols, a special currency that can be found in chests, in dungeons, and gotten as rewards for completing World Events like the World Boss Ashava.
Are Whispering Keys Worth It in Diablo 4?
Diablo 4 can spawn Silent Chests almost anywhere, showing up for a limited time on a player's minimap. At the time of this writing, it doesn't appear that Silent Chests show up in any kind of order; the loot inside of them also appears to be completely random. This, unfortunately, means that it's hard to say for sure if the Whispering Keys are worth the 20 Murmuring Obols that they cost.
Most likely, when players are in the early stages of the game, it may be better to spend their Obols on the other items in the Purveyor of Curiosities. Players can pick a particular item type, like a cap, a two-handed axe, a wand, or an amulet that they know they can use; they are guaranteed to get a common to legendary item of that type with a random set of stats.
This way, players are guaranteed to get an item they know is useful instead of relying completely on whatever the Silent Chest offers. However, the chests can hold a lot of Diablo 4 gold, which players may prefer over items.
