There’s no denying that Diablo 3 is a massive game. With the legacy of one of the largest and most well-known action RPG franchises looming overhead, it’s no surprise that the game sold well. Ever since its release though, gamers have fought tooth and nail both for and against it, praising its pedigree and shaming some of its more questionable design choices. When it made the move to consoles, many of these glaring issues were rectified. Now, it’s looking like another audience may get a chance to venture into the dark land of Sanctuary.
As is an increasing trend in the current gaming news landscape, announcements are seemingly met less with wild fanfare and more often with a muffled yawn. Rather than coming from an official Blizzard press release, a Eurogamer reader may have discovered that Diablo 3 will be making its way to the Xbox One thanks to a pre-order listing posted to retailer Argos’ website.
This comes after both Best Buy Canada and FutureShop made the same mistake. Whether this is a simple input error following the news that the game would be coming to PS4, or a piece of information that was leaked too early, it’s not exactly a surprise that the game could be coming to another next-gen console.
To further enforce the rumors, Blizzard had the following to say to Eurogamer in response to their claims:
“One of our goals is to bring Diablo 3 to as many players as possible, but we don’t have any other platform announcements to share at this time.”
Honestly, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to anyone if Diablo 3 were to make its way onto the Xbox One. Save for Nintendo consoles, the game can be found or will soon be found on just about every console from both this generation and last. With the game having been released on Xbox 360, an Xbox One release just seems logical. Obviously, this should only be taken with a grain of salt until Blizzard officially confirms anything, but the way that they made a point of not outright denying the game’s existence definitely lends credibility to the rumor.
Considering the console version of Diablo 3 is being praised for addressing the design issues people had with the PC version, as evidenced in our review, spreading itself to both next-gen consoles seems a logical step. With the new expansion gearing up for release with a new gameplay mode and merchant type and the PC version remaining stone-faced in regards to its omission of offline play, it’s clear that Blizzard has no plans to slow down on their production of Diablo-related content. Keep your eyes open for any upcoming developments as there are sure to be a few as the expansion nears release.
Would the release of an Xbox One version of Diablo 3 be the final push you need to purchase it? What would you like to see added to the series next?
Diablo 3 is available now on PC, Mac, Xbox 360 and PS3 with its Reaper of Souls expansion releasing in 2014 for Mac, PC, and PS4. There are rumors that the game will also make its way to Xbox One.
