Sorry, but we've got some bad news for fans of the highly anticipated second sequel to Diablo. It was revealed by Activision Blizzard's CFO Thomas Tippl at a presentation in New York recently that we won't be seeing the return of the series demonic antagonist for at least 2 more years.
According to a slide from Tippl's presentation depicting projected growth from Blizzard's lineup of titles, we can expect to see the release of Starcraft II as well as Cataclysm - the next expansion in the World of Warcraft series - in 2010, but no Diablo III until at least 2011.
News has been slow to come for fans of Diablo III, with many being surprised by the game not having as huge a presence at this year's BlizzCon as was originally expected. To date, Blizzard has announced four playable character classes for the game including Barbarian, Witch Doctor, Wizard and Monk, but not much in the way of plot details. The current projected timeline would seem to fit with this pattern, considering that Blizzard has never been one to rush a product out the door to soon - something we highly respect here at Game Rant.
A projected release of Diablo III for 2010 was never really a viable option in my opinion - it would be a strange business move for Blizzard to release 3 mainstream sequels/expansions in one 12-month period. So, while I'm sure that the projection slide is not iron-clad, we will have to look forward to continued WoW support and content as well as Starcraft II to keep us busy until the heavens tremble sometime in our very near future.
I really hope to see the necromancer return in Diablo III, what class would you most like to see/play?
