Back in 2018, in order to keep the long-running tradition intact, Blizzard Entertainment decided to have its Darkening of Tristram event return to the wildly popular action-RPG, Diablo 3, and it looks as if this year is going to be no different. As a matter of fact, the annual event is live now, with players both old and new being given the chance to dive into the franchise's past by playing through the original game's levels and fighting some classic bosses.

According to Blizzard, Diablo 3's Darkening of Tristram for this year began on January 3, 2019 at 4:00 PM PST, and it is set to run all the way through January 31, 2019 at 4:00 PM PST, giving players a few weeks to enter the dungeon, claim their rewards, and do battle with the evils therein. For the uninitiated, this anniversary event lets fans unlock unique transmogrification effects, achievements, portraits, pets, and more, with certain rewards being harder to find than others and requiring more achievements to be completed before they're unlocked.

Diablo 3's Darkening of Tristram event has long been a mainstay for players on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, but it's worth noting that this is the inaugural year for the event on the Nintendo Switch, as the action-RPG was ported to the hybrid-mobile console toward the end of 2018. With this being the case, it will be interesting to see how owners of the Switch version respond to the retro-inspired content.

For those who have already run through Diablo 3's Darkening of Tristram event before, there may not be much incentive to do so again, save for the dose of nostalgia that it serves up on an annual basis. Nevertheless, for those who might have missed out on something previously, now's the time to give it a go once more. If anything, it can serve as a decent diversion until Blizzard decides to announce its new Diablo projects in 2019.

Diablo 3 is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
