With Diablo 2: Resurrected’s launch less than ten days away, many gamers are looking forward to revisited the 20 year old classic with a fresh paint of coat. The team behind the game have put an incredible emphasis on not altering the original experience and trying to capture that nostalgia for the veteran players while updating cinematics, art assets, and adding just a handful of quality of life and UX improvements.

Although the core Diablo 2: Resurrected launch is definitely just aiming to deliver a remastered version of the original experience, the idea of post-launch additions to the game isn’t entirely off the table. Depending on the player reception to the game’s launch, it seems very possible that new content could be added in future updates.

During a recent press event, Game Rant had a chance to connect with Studio Design Director Rob Gallerani and Project Lead Michael Bukowski. During the conversation, the future of Diablo 2: Resurrected came up multiple times and, although the focus is clearly on getting the initial launch perfect, both Rob and Michael seemed excited about the possibilities of what could come next if the game finds an audience and connects with fans…

Question: With Diablo 2: Resurrected was there ever any consideration of keeping the core game mechanics intact, but still finding ways to maybe add new enemies or new items? Things that just add more without changing the core experience?

Blizzard (Rob and Michael): Oh, yeah. We definitely geeked out about those kind of things. Lots of things that wouldn't fundamentally change anything but could just be plugged in. We wanted to build a strong foundations before we started hitting the third and fourth floors. We definitely have lots of ideas, but right now we're making sure we get the core game right. We've unlocked all the ladder specific content and can do that in single player and non-ladder. We'll have to see what happens once the game goes live in terms of what we do in terms or balancing, new items, etc.

Obviously that doesn't count as any confirmation of exact plans, but it may be exciting for some fans to hear that there's the possibility brand new content could be added down the road if the game's foundation is strong and there is community demand for that sort of addition.
