Diablo 2: Resurrected is the upcoming remaster of the 2000 action-RPG Diablo 2, developed by Blizzard Entertainment. The new title will not only contain a graphically-updated version of the original game, but will also incorporate the Lord of Destruction expansion pack. Diablo 2: Resurrected promises to return players to one of the most popular titles in the Diablo series, and some of most fondly-remembered classes.

There are seven playable classes in Diablo 2: Resurrected at launch, ranging from the brutal Barbarian to the unholy Necromancer. Two of these classes, the Druid and the Sorceress, share access to Elemental magic. However, they each approach it in a different way, and have their own unique style. To help players pick between Diablo 2: Resurrected's two Elemental casters, here's a breakdown of their abilities.

Sorceress Skills in Diablo 2: Resurrected

Diablo4 Sorceress vs Diablo 2 Resurrected

Diablo 2: Resurrected is a graphical remaster rather than a full remake, which means that the game's original mechanics and balance are still intact. Therefore, the Sorceress will still be the powerful yet fragile ranged-caster that she was in the original Diablo 2.

The Sorceress' strength lies in her mastery of the three Elemental magics: Cold, Fire, and Lightning. Cold Spells in Diablo 2: Resurrected deal less damage than their Elemental counterparts, but have a greater crowd-control potential. This is due to their ability to Chill and Freeze enemies, slowing their actions or stopping them in their tracks.

On the other end of the spectrum, Fire Spells deal the highest damage but have no special effects. They also require the most skill to aim and use effectively. Finally, the Diablo 2: Resurrected Sorceress' Lightning Spells are quick to cast and cooldown, but are not hugely damaging. Despite this, they can offer a lot of utility with abilities like Telekinesis and Teleport. Combining Lightning with Fire and Cold makes the Sorceress the undisputed master of the Elements in Diablo 2: Resurrected.

Druid Skills in Diablo 2: Resurrected

While the Sorceress class focuses on pure Elemental magic, the Druid in Diablo 2: Resurrected mixes it up with Primal and Shapeshifting magic. The Druid's Elemental skills are centered almost entirely on damage spells, using only the Fire and Cold Elements. While the Druid can't cast as frequently as the Sorceress, his spells can still be deadly when used at the right moment.

The second core talent of the Druid is Shapeshifting, which allows the character to manipulate his own form. Using Shapeshifting, the Druid can take on either the Werewolf or Werebear form. It's this ability that makes the Druid a hybrid class, and gives him much more survivability than the fragile Sorceress. However, the downside of Shapeshifting is that the Druid can't cast the vast majority of his Elemental skills while shifted. This means the player has to make a choice between one or the other in each fight.

The final core Druid skill group also boosts his toughness in Diablo 2: Resurrected, though in a very different way. The Summoning skills allow the Druid to call upon the power of Primal magic to summon natural allies. These range from tangling vines to dire wolves, and can be used to draw aggro away from the Druid. Summoning skills also allow the Druid to summon Spirits which can buff themselves and nearby allies, making the Druid the most versatile class in the game, with spellcasting, melee, crowd-control, and support abilities.

Which Class to Choose in Diablo 2: Resurrected

Diablo 2 Resurrected Druid Class

When players are choosing between the Sorceress and Druid in Diablo 2: Resurrected, they first thing they'll need to consider is survivability. The Druid is undoubtedly the tougher of the pair, with Summoning and Shapeshifting adding a lot of defensive options. Additionally, the Druid gains an extra 0.5 HP each time he levels up, 50% more than the Sorceress. This gives the Druid an extra layer of toughness, while the Sorceress is a pure glass-cannon, and keeping her alive in a chaotic fight is a lot more of a challenge

However, while she may not be tough, the Sorceress can output levels of area-of-effect damage that the Druid simply can't match. This means players who want to blast their way through hordes of enemies in seconds should definitely go for the fragile ranged-caster. Few classes in Diablo 2: Resurrected can match up to the Sorceress' damage potential, the Druid included.

The final point to consider when comparing these two classes is versatility. Diablo 2: Resurrected has many different kinds of enemies and challenges for players to overcome, and a single-focus class can struggle with the wrong matchup. The Druid overcomes this problem through being one of the most versatile classes in the game, with three very different skill groups to choose from. While the Sorceress does have some versatility through the varying effects of Cold, Fire, and Lightning, she is still bound to Elemental damage and nothing else.

Overall, the Druid is the perfect class for players that want a good all-rounder in Diablo 2: Resurrected, able to adapt to any threat. For those players who prefer the raw power of flashy, glass-cannon Elemental magic however, the Sorceress is the better choice.

Diablo 2: Resurrected will be available September 23, 2021 for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
